Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The educational science project “C04 Experiences of Non/Belonging and (In)Justice in the Triangle of School, Youth, and Digital Platforms” is seeking a academic staff member to start on April 1, 2026.

The project is part of the DFG Collaborative Research Center 1750 In:just Inclusion: Recognition: Justice. Participation and involvement in the process of growing up and is jointly managed by Mirja Silkenbeumer and Julia Becher.Located at the intersection of inequality, school, and youth research, this subproject is dedicated to the question of the conditions under which feelings of school-related (in)justice arise in young people and how these feelings are negotiated within peer culture. Group discussions and social media posts will be collected and evaluated using reconstructive methods.

The position is to be filled at the Institute of Education.

  • Contribute to the organization and realization of the research project and organization, sampling and field access, development of tools for data collection, data collection in two federal states and reconstructive data analysis
  • Pursue a PhD within the framework of the project
  • Disseminate research findings through publications and presentations in German and English
  • Participation in the academic activities of the Collaborative Research Centre and the internal phd programme

Skills/Qualifications

Your profile:

  • Successfully completed academic university degree (Master’s, Diploma, or equivalent) in Educational Science, Sociology, or Social Sciences
  • Strong research interest in the fields of peer and youth studies and research on educational inequality and (in)justice
  • A high level of proficiency in German and English or willingness to improve (B2 until 2027)
  • Prior knowledge in youth research is desirable
  • Solid expertise of qualitative methods of empirical social research (preferably objective hermeneutics and/or visual hermeneutic approaches) is desirable
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team, high personal commitment

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The position is paid according to EG 13 TV-L and is to be filled by 4/1/2026, for a fixed term until December 31, 2029.

The position serves the purpose of academic qualification (doctorate).
