Overview

The core purpose of the Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM) is to advance the clinical and professional practice of Indigenous and Registered Midwives in Ontario. We are seeking a full-time Policy Analyst, Indigenous Midwifery, to join our dynamic and progressive organization. Reporting to the Manager of the Indigenous Midwifery department, the Policy Analyst is responsible for researching, writing, educating and advocating on Indigenous midwifery and health policy issues to achieve the strategic goals of the AOM.

Responsibilities
  • Provides culturally safe service and employ humility when working collaboratively across the organization, particularly with the Indigenous Midwifery (IM) and Health-Care Equity, Quality and Human Rights (HEQHR) departments
  • Supports a workplace that is respectful and inclusive; and specifically, works to fulfil the expectations described in the AOM’s Anti-Oppression, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy
  • Engages in organizational trainings and opportunities to promote cultural safety and positive work environments within and across teams
  • Works collaboratively within and across teams to ensure high quality programs and services for members
  • Provides support to other members of the staff team during periods of high workload
  • Supports a workplace that is healthy and safe by engaging in health and safety activities and monitoring the workplace for and reporting hazards to physical and mental health
  • Attends and participates in staff and team meetings
  • Develops an annual work plan with their manager or director, in the context of the AOM strategic plan
  • Ensures coverage of AOM core programs/services during vacations/leaves of other staff
  • Assists with AOM conference or conference-related work, as requested
  • Contributes to content for communications or publications (e.g., web content, member emails, and content for either member or public consumption) as requested
  • Monitors and updates the AOM website as required
  • Ensures all external communications comply with AOM Communications Standards
  • Ensures appropriate level security of information stored within the AOM
Specific Responsibilities
  • External Partnerships and Relationships: maintains working relationships with external partners and stakeholders; represents the AOM on working groups and projects as assigned
  • Provides member support to Indigenous midwives and develops materials to assist those members with issues
  • Develops and implements strategic workplans to promote Indigenous midwifery restoration and renewal
  • Engages in organizational trainings and opportunities to promote cultural safety within AOM staff, the midwifery profession, and health care system
  • Develops and presents materials and educational sessions regarding Indigenous midwifery to staff, at conferences and webinars
  • Participates as required on committees or task forces, supporting the Director, Chair and midwifery members
  • Provides risk management support to Indigenous and Aboriginal midwives in collaboration with the QRM team
  • Develops briefing notes for the Board, government ministries, and Indigenous midwifery stakeholders
  • Assists in developing annual plans for work groups/committees and tracks deliverables
Policy Analysis
  • Serves as staff lead on a portfolio of policy topics, responding to developments and initiating work as needed
  • Conducts research and provides summaries on key issues and policy directives to the Manager and Director
  • Prepares policy papers, briefing notes, background summaries, presentations and recommendations on policy issues impacting Indigenous midwifery and the AOM
  • Contributes to policy analysis within an equity, diversity, human rights and Indigenous self-determination framework
  • Writes grant proposals and reports to various bodies as required
  • Tracks deliverables for Indigenous midwifery and Indigenous health projects led
  • Helps develop strategic approaches to AOM grant proposals and position papers submitted to government and rights holders
  • Keeps current on issues affecting Indigenous midwifery at international, national and provincial levels
  • Identifies issues with potential impact on the profession and provides briefing notes as required
  • Supports committees/work groups/task forces as assigned
  • Monitors and updates the AOM website related to Indigenous midwifery and related communications
  • Submits articles for AOM publications and collaborates with teams on messaging and educational materials
  • Collaborates with the Board and staff on Indigenous midwifery work and with the Communications team on educational materials and online presence
  • Works with Policy, Communications, Membership and other teams on intersecting policy issues affecting Indigenous, rural and remote communities
  • Identifies ongoing needs of Indigenous midwives and shares information across AOM teams
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Indigenous health policy and stakeholders; maintains transferable relationships with Indigenous communities/organizations in health
Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience working with/for Indigenous communities/organizations in health, with a track record of collaboration and accountability
  • Lived experience or knowledge of colonization effects, racism and trauma is desirable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated strength in policy analysis and recommendations
  • In-depth knowledge of cultural protocols, history and values of Indigenous people
  • Ability to demonstrate culturally safe communications with Indigenous peoples
  • Strong understanding of social and cultural determinants of Indigenous health
  • Able to build trusting relationships and bridge Indigenous and non-Indigenous communication styles
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, maturity, diplomacy and professionalism
  • Experience in midwifery or Indigenous health policy is an asset
  • Understanding of federal and provincial Indigenous health policy and stakeholders (Ontario) is an asset
  • Master’s degree in public policy, Indigenous governance or health is an asset
  • Strong analytical, research and writing skills
  • Strategic thinker with a strong interest in health issues and health policy
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines and demands; flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook; Excel experience is an asset
Compensation and Schedule

Starting Salary: from $68,500 to $85,625 depending on qualifications.

This is a full-time permanent position of 35 hours per week.

This position is remote, but the successful candidate will be expected to travel to Toronto for special events 1-3 times per year.
