Position Summary
As a Weld Design Engineer, you will lead the design of structural welded assemblies used in our industry-leading transit buses. This is a technical role requiring deep knowledge of welding design theory and material behavior, ideally from a formal education in welding or materials engineering, combined with practical experience in a manufacturing environment. You will work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, quality, and service teams to ensure our products meet performance, safety, and durability standards.
What You Will Do
- Design welded structures that meet customer specifications and comply with applicable industry standards and regulations
- Apply advanced welding design theory and calculations to develop structurally sound and manufacturable solutions
- Create and release engineering drawings and bills of materials (BOMs) using Siemens NX and Teamcenter
- Interpret Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results to inform design decisions
- Collaborate with internal departments and external suppliers to validate designs and meet production timelines
- Support prototype development and conduct testing to confirm design integrity and fit
- Provide engineering support to production, quality, and service teams
- Review and approve technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and clarity
- Maintain comprehensive project records in line with internal processes
What You Need to Be Successful
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a closely related field (candidates with Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering degrees and formal welding specialization will also be considered)
- 4+ years of design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
- Strong knowledge of welding standards, structural design, and material properties
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (Siemens NX preferred) and product lifecycle management tools (Teamcenter)
- Ability to interpret and apply Finite Element Analysis (FEA) data
- Experience working with large structural welded assemblies or heavy-duty vehicle applications
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Occasional travel may be required (minimal)
- Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certification considered an asset
- Registered P.Eng or eligibility for registration considered an asset
