Position Summary
Responsible for maintaining contracted assets (roadways, medians, signs, guardrails, fences, bridges, tunnels, vegetation, etc.) per contract standards and conditions as directed by the Patrol Supervisor.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform duties of shift supervisor during the winter maintenance season.
- Assist the supervisor with organizing and planning daily/weekly work, and arrange for equipment, material and labor.
- Oversee work operations to ensure value for money and compliance with safety requirements, standards, policies and procedures.
- Provide leadership and training to junior Ferrovial Services staff, including safety techniques, methods and procedures.
- Inspect work performed by contract staff for compliance to standards and contractual agreements; advise contractors of deficiencies and report performance to supervisor.
- Advise supervisor on work performance, training, planning and organizing traffic control at work sites.
Performs administrative activities in accordance with MTO and Ferrovial Services procedures:
- Complete, review and maintain records related to equipment operation, maintenance hours, and material usage (e.g., MMIS, daily inspection books, equipment time sheets, expense forms, sand and salt usage, etc.).
- Assist in preparing and monitoring weekly, monthly and annual work plans.
- Provide information for analysis of contractor or public claims.
- Liaise with property owners, the general public and organizations such as police, municipal and other Ontario Government Ministries, and utility companies to exchange information, promote public relations and ensure compliance with requirements.
- Occasionally operate patrol equipment as needed for efficient operations.
- Occasionally perform a variety of laboring tasks as needed for patrol operations.
Performs related duties:
- Act as supervisor during absences.
- Compile and record information for Highway and Road inventory (e.g., number of entrances, bridges, kilometres of road, mowable hectares).
- Investigate and report on and, when possible, resolve public complaints.
- Patrol assigned roads and report hazards or deficiencies.
- Initiate contract staff call-outs and administer hired equipment tenders.
- Respond on behalf of the Ministry and Ferrovial Services in emergencies (accidents, spills, weather, etc.).
- Other duties as assigned; comply with legal requirements and contribute to a diverse, inclusive and fair work environment; follow company policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of summer and winter maintenance operations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it relates to maintenance activities.
- Working knowledge of maintenance and construction contracts; proficient in Microsoft Office; good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prepare and maintain neat, accurate records.
- Strong investigative/analytical skills to research claims and analyze technical data.
- Ability to use software packages for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and scheduling applications.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and adapt methods during winter maintenance conditions.
- Knowledge of environment and regulations to ensure safety of self and others.
- Strong safety awareness and ability to recognize hazards and take corrective action.
- Ability to communicate safety instructions to co-workers; wear PPE as required.
- Ability to think clearly and stay focused on safety while using tools and operating equipment.
- Will be required to wear appropriate PPE.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma (Required)
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial/industry repair, outdoor maintenance or landscaping (preferred).
- Must hold a valid Ontario Class “DZ” Driver’s License and MTO Operator’s Permit, with an acceptable driving record.
Work Conditions / Physical Demands
- Outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold; possible exposure to wet/humid conditions, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles. Noise level typically moderate, with potential for higher levels.
