The Ontario Tech Student Union lovingly referred to as the OTSU is a not-for-profit organization that aims to enhance the student experience at Ontario Tech University. Were a small team comprised of full-time staff part-time staff and our elected Students Executives and Board of Directors.

JOB SUMMARY

The VP of Student Affairs is the chief liaison between Ontario Tech students and the university administration. You are responsible for advocating on behalf of students while sitting on Ontario Tech committees. Reporting to the President you will encourage the implementation of advocacy initiatives projects and campaigns for the Student Union within Ontario Tech.

The VP of Student Affairs has full-time hours during the summer semester and part-time hours during the fall and winter semesters. The Vice President of Student Affairs is expected to work 40 hours each week during the summer and up to 15 hours each week for the remainder of the term. The term will be one year commencing May 1 and expiring on April 30 the following year.

Evening and weekend hours will be required to meet the organizations needs and to fulfill job responsibilities.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Responsibilities and Powers of each executive is listed in the Bylaws section 12.

Public Relations and Advocacy

  • serve as a chief liaison between all students of Ontario Tech and its administration;
  • encourage the implementation of the initiatives projects and campaigns of the Student Union within Ontario Tech;
  • support Ontario Tech students by advocating to Ontario Tech on their behalf with respect to student concerns and sitting on Ontario Tech committees (e.g. chairing the Women at Ontario Tech Committee);
  • act as the official liaison between the Student Union and any relevant Ontario Tech organizations offices and departments dedicated to the awareness of indigenous education inclusivity equity discrimination and harassment to help build a sense of community among students; and
  • work with the Student Union personnel to oversee advocacy and student rights services and consult with students to ensure that their needs are being met.

Financial

  • subject to any restrictions established by the Board to make or cause to be made and execute on behalf of the Student Union any kind of contract which the Student Union may lawfully enter into;
  • to exercise general supervision over all the disbursements of the members monies to all members organizations and generally exercise supervision over financial operations; and
  • to make authorize and further delegate such all such expenditures as have been delegated by the Board.

Organizational Accountability

  • to develop and implement such rules regulations policies and procedures as are required to fulfill their responsibilities provided that any such rules regulations policies and procedures are invalid to the extent they are inconsistent with the Act the Articles the Bylaws and the rules regulations policies and procedures established by the Board; and
  • to appoint such agents and engage such employees as it may deem necessary and such persons shall have such authority and shall perform such duties as shall be prescribed by the Board from time to time.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • to establish such working groups or task forces as they deem necessary from time to time;
  • attend all meetings of the Board except were required to be absent and attend all meetings of the Executive; and
  • train and advise the incoming Vice-President of Student Affairs.

Supervisory

  • to hire and supervise an Executive Director for the Student Union; and
  • responsible for ensuring a healthy and safe working environment for all staff.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certifications

As per section 11.3 of the OTSU By-Laws a person may not be nominated elected appointed or otherwise serve (or

continue to serve) as an Executive if that Person :

  • is less than 18 years of age;
  • has been declared incapable by a court in Canada or in another country; or
  • currently has the status of a bankrupt.

In addition to the foregoing a person may not be nominated elected (or re-elected) or appointed unless that person is

currently either :

  • i) a Full Time Voting Member in good standing; or
  • ii) an Executive; and
  • is in Academic Good Standing.

Experience

  • Any experience in leadership positions is an asset
  • Previous involvement with the Student Union is an asset
