Organization and Role

Lethbridge Police Victim/Witness Services Unit (V/WSU) is a police‑based victim assistance program that provides trauma‑informed support, information, referrals, safety planning and education designed with a victim‑centered approach. V/WSU supports victims and witnesses of crime and tragedy to heal and navigate the criminal justice system, in partnership with the Lethbridge Police Service and community services, 24/7.

V/WSU has supported the community since 1991. Volunteer Crisis Support Workers are first responders who provide compassionate support and education related to trauma, crisis intervention and the unique victim experience.

On‑scene and Services

Our on‑scene assistance and referrals may include: abuse and assault; domestic violence; suicide/sudden death; missing persons; fraud; major collisions; robbery; harassment/stalking; bereavement; homicide.

Responsibilities
  • Have a desire to support victims in the community through trauma and tragedy and help them navigate the criminal justice system
  • Be available to volunteer for a minimum of two (2) 12‑hour on‑call scheduled shifts per month
  • Be prepared to respond to calls at any time during a scheduled shift
  • Attend all required introductory training sessions (January 14, 21, 28 from 6–9pm and January 17 and 24 from 8am–4pm)
  • Attend monthly team knowledge development meetings
Qualifications
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Attend all shifts committed to
  • Provide trauma‑informed, client‑centered service to community members from all walks of life
  • Possess valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Be enthusiastic, friendly and outgoing with a positive attitude
  • Be a good team player who contributes positively to the team
  • Be physically capable to access buildings/dwellings with limited accessibility (e.g., climbing stairs)
  • Have strong oral and written communication, interpersonal and active listening skills
  • Have awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture and history
  • Have awareness of diverse demographics and cultures within the City of Lethbridge
  • Be familiar with and knowledgeable about the City of Lethbridge
Hiring Process
  1. Submit online application before 12:00 PM MST on October 15, 2025
  2. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an in‑person interview
  3. Qualified candidates will undergo police information check, vulnerable sector checks, fingerprinting and reference checks
    1. Complete an online webform and provide two valid pieces of government-issued identification, one with a photo
    2. If not born in Canada, provide Canada Permanent Residency Card or proof of Canadian citizenship
    3. If resided outside Canada for six months or longer in the past 10 years, provide a police certificate from each country of residence
  4. After background checks, candidates will be invited to a job shadow shift with current V/WSU Crisis Support Workers
  5. Final selections and offers of position as a Volunteer - Crisis Support Worker will be made
  6. Mandatory training will be held on January 14, 21, 28 from 6–9pm and January 17 and 24 from 8am–4pm
  7. Active Crisis Support with V/WSU will begin February 2026

Facility Dogs: LPS has two facility dogs in the workplace to support employees and victims/witnesses through the Criminal Justice Process. A Facility Dog is directed by a trained professional. Dogs may be in various areas of the building; police service dogs have limited interaction with employees on site under supervision.

Landed Immigrant/Citizenship Status: The Lethbridge Police Service welcomes Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents. A significant background screening process is required for security clearance. We do not sponsor work permits/visas or permanent residence applications at this time.
