We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our Respiratory Asthma Service as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Band 7) with a clearly defined pathway to progression as a Qualified ACP (Band 8a). This role is for a registered nurse with substantial experience in asthma or respiratory care, working or aspiring to work at an advanced specialist practice level.
This post is supported by a structured development programme aligned to the Multiprofessional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice. You will contribute to the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with asthma, including those with complex and high‑risk disease, and progressively develop autonomy in clinical decision making, supported by structured supervision, education and proficiency assessment.

Clinical:
Practice in compliance with the code of professional conduct, being responsible and accountable for decisions, actions and omissions at this level of advanced practice.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of advanced responsibility and autonomy, recognising limits of competence and scope of practice, especially when dealing with complexity, risk or uncertainty.
Develop professional judgment skills to identify when to escalade and seek guidance, critically reflect on practice, and cultivate self‑awareness, emotional intelligence and willingness to change or challenge thought processes.
Work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods (history taking, physical and holistic assessments, identifying risk factors, mental health assessments, request/undertake and interpretation of diagnostic tests, and health needs assessments).
Develop effective communication skills, supporting people in making decisions, planning care and achieving positive health changes, promoting person‑centred approaches.
Leadership and management:
Initiate and develop effective relationships, fostering clarity of the ACP role within teams to encourage efficient working.
Negotiate an individual scope of practice within legal, ethical, professional, and organisational policies and governance frameworks, focusing on risk management, safety and high‑quality care.
Evaluate own practices as an ACP, participating in MDT and team evaluations, recognising the impact of advanced clinical practice on service function, effectiveness and quality.
Actively engage in peer review to inform own and others' practice, fostering strategies to act on learning and make improvements, with support from peers and clinical supervisors.
Seek feedback and involvement from individuals, families, carers and colleagues to inform personal and service development.
Education:
Critically assess and address own learning needs as an ACP, working toward a personal development plan covering the four pillars of advanced clinical practice relevant to your clinical service.
Critically reflect to maximise your clinical skills and knowledge, evidence demonstrated in your professional portfolio.
Engage in performance reviews and appraisal processes as required by OUH, including clinical supervision, tripartite review meetings and participation in service development.
Advocate for and contribute to a culture of learning, inspiring current and future staff.
Act as an educator within your scope, developing teaching skills and instilling confidence in others.
Research:
Develop and support a knowledge‑rich enquiry culture, fostering research values.
Engage in research activities, upholding good research practice to develop evidence‑based strategies that enhance quality, safety, productivity, value or wellbeing.
Evaluate and audit your clinical practice, selecting valid, reliable methods and acting on findings with support as needed.
Assist in implementing robust local governance systems and documentation processes, reviewing changes critically.
