Trade Assistant – Mechanical (Job Description)
Position Summary
The Mechanical Trade Assistant supports qualified tradespeople—such as mechanical fitters, machinists, and maintenance technicians—by performing basic mechanical tasks, preparing work areas, handling tools and materials, and assisting with repairs, installations, and maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Support
- Assist mechanical fitters and technicians with the installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
- Support tasks such as dismantling machinery, cleaning parts, replacing basic components, and reassembling equipment.
- Help with lubrication, alignment, and simple mechanical adjustments under supervision.
- Tools & Equipment Handling
- Prepare, organize, and maintain tools, parts, and equipment required for mechanical work.
- Operate basic workshop tools (grinders, drills, hand tools) safely and efficiently.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and moving materials or machinery.
- Worksite Preparation
- Set up and clean work areas before and after tasks.
- Ensure equipment, tools, and workspaces are kept tidy and hazard‑free.
- Lay out materials and components as required for mechanical tasks.
- Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements and lock‑out/tag‑out instructions.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and risk assessments.
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or equipment faults.
- General Support
- Assist with record‑keeping, completing job cards, and documenting maintenance activities.
- Transport tools and equipment between job sites or work areas.
- Perform general labouring duties as required by supervisors.
Required Qualifications
- Basic mechanical aptitude or interest in mechanical trades.
- Previous experience as a trade assistant or general labourer (advantage).
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
- Valid driver’s license or site‑specific certifications (e.g., forklift, EWP, confined space) may be beneficial.
