Position

Position Purpose summary: The Thrift Store Worker will provide service to customers, sort incoming products, and assist the manager in maintaining store operations. The Thrift Store Worker may be asked to perform duties in the front of the store (e.g., cashier) or in the warehouse (e.g., receiving and sorting donations). The Thrift Store Worker will be asked to work throughout the store, focusing on one area for a full day or for a portion of the day. Operational needs will dictate the schedule.

Roles

Clerk

  • Contributes to meeting store sales budget by maintaining customer service standards
  • Implements store layout plans to attract customers including window displays and merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through tidy maintenance
  • May perform cleaning duties such as vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, wiping shelves and counters, washing windows
  • Replenishes inventory levels based on Supervisor's directions: this may include placing clothing and linen items on racks, re-stocking shoes, books, bric-a-brac, jewelry and other products sold in the store
  • Contributes to inventory control in appropriate locations, which may include packaging and lifting boxes and/or bags
  • Protects the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring
  • Contributes to staff and customer safety (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store, cleans spills, maintains store cleanliness)
  • Takes responsibility for accurate completion of all customer transactions including Visa, debit, etc.
  • May be required to prepare deposits
  • May answer phones
  • May set up silent auction items as per Supervisor's instruction
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Roles - warehouse

  • Process raw materials by unloading, sorting, packing, storing, loading, and baling donations; protects the integrity of the donations
  • Select donations for store distributions meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded and good quality merchandise
  • Check incoming clothing donations for smell and quality; if suitable, place in clothing and linen storage area; if unsuitable, re-bag as needed, tag, and place in baling room
  • Check shoes, handbags, duffle bags and suitcases for cleanliness and resale; place items into the sorting area for further processing or bale or garbage if unsuitable
  • Inspect furniture for resale suitability; if in good, clean condition, price and place on sales floor
  • Test price and tag donations to go onto the retail floor; price and display non-testing items for sale
  • Break down unsellable furniture and dispose in the garbage bin
  • Place other donations in assigned areas for pricing, e.g., move pre-sorted linens to linen area and neatly stack
  • Place other unusable items in appropriate places for pick-up (e.g., metal, cardboard and magazine disposal and recycling)
  • May vacuum and clean donations
  • May perform minor store maintenance, repair, garbage pick-up for workstations and cleaning
  • Ensure the work area is kept tidy and clean; ensure indoor and outdoor areas are tidy and safe for customers and staff
  • Assist customers in unloading and loading items in a professional and respectful way
  • Open and close all receiving and bale gates and warehouse doors; ensure all doors are locked at the end of the day, including dumpster

Health, Safety and Environmental

  • Comply with all safety procedures
  • Comply with indoor/outdoor tidy maintenance guidelines
  • Follow Ocean Crest policies for a safe and healthy workplace, environmental protection, and energy conservation; report any environmental, health, or safety concerns or suggestions to the manager
  • Ensure proper lifting techniques are used
  • Ensure unauthorized persons are not in employee areas unless accompanied by a staff member
  • Report safety issues to Health and Safety representative and/or supervisor promptly
  • Notify supervisor immediately if a customer-related issue arises

  • Internal: Manager, Assistant, Supervisor, co-workers

Financial and Materials Management

  • Processes sales transactions; no budget responsibilities
  • Responsible for safekeeping of Thrift Store supplies and equipment for business use

Working Conditions

  • Work schedule may vary week to week and include weekdays and/or Saturdays
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching; ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds
  • Follow precautionary measures and safety rules, including wearing gloves when handling unknown objects and wearing steel-toed boots

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of High School Grade 12 or equivalent
  • WHMIS Training (provided as part of probationary training)
  • First Aid (not required but an asset)
Experience and Skills
  • Cash handling experience is an asset; knowledge and experience using a cash register, POS, Interac and/or credit card processing
  • Brand awareness and retail experience are assets
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Self-motivated and disciplined
  • Good listening, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (English)
  • Ability to work with direction and support as part of a team
  • Strong sense of integrity, confidentiality, ethics, fairness and flexibility
  • Experience testing electronics and ability to do minor repairs is an asset
  • Willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks (e.g., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.99 to $18.27, with a maximum of $18.55. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience and qualifications.
