Job Profile

Lions Housing Centres Inc. is seeking enthusiastic individuals for Casual Tenant Companion positions within our Supportive Housing department. In this role, you will play a vital part in fostering tenant independence by providing compassionate support with activities of daily living. Your efforts will help promote dignity, self-esteem, and overall well-being for our residents. You will be responsible for observing and reporting any changes in cognitive or health status, ensuring our tenants receive the care they need. Additionally, you will actively engage in recreational activities and leisure programs. Tenant Companions will report directly to the Director of Resident Services.

Job Responsibilities
  • Quality Tenant Service
    • Functions within the Mission and Program Values.
    • Actively participates in the Quality Management Program of the facility.
    • Complies with the policies and procedures of the facility participating in amendments, changes, or additions as they apply to effective and efficient practice.
    • Promotes independence, self-confidence, and protection of dignity by encouraging tenants to perform their own activities of daily living, assisting only as the need is demonstrated or requested.
    • Assist the tenant with ambulation ensuring ambulatory equipment is used correctly and is in safe operational condition.
    • Reminds tenant, only when necessary, to take their medications, keep appointments, and attend chosen leisure activities using methods that encourage independence, self-esteem and protects personal dignity.
    • Provides general supervision, guidance and direction observing, documenting, and reporting any changes in cognitive functioning and/or health status to the Supportive Housing Manager.
    • Participates in the planning and implementing of leisure activities.
    • Encourages tenant in meaningful communication by listening, understanding, and responding appropriately.
    • Keeps families and/or significant others informed of tenant activities and status.
    • Encourages family and significant others to participate in activity and life skills with the tenant.
  • Activities of Daily Living
    • Provides tenant with orientation and reminders regarding daily routines and activities, and to person, place, and time.
    • Provides cueing and assistance as required with elimination and provides reminders and cues to assist tenant in self-management of incontinence.
    • Promotes good personal hygiene and provides reminders and assistance, as required with bathing, showers, shaving, personal care and dressing.
  • Medication Reminders
    • Provides medication reminders from pre-measured, pre-packaged medication and assist with non-prescription medication as required or instructed by Manager.
  • Food Service
    • Encourages tenant to assist in the preparation of meals and snacks.
    • Supervises the dining room, promoting a relaxed, unhurried and enjoyable dining experience.
    • Cleans and tidies after meals and snacks encourages tenants to participate therefore helping them to feel wanted and needed.
    • Ensures safe food handling practices as per policy.
    • Reports to the Supportive Housing Manager and documents any changes in appetite, ability to eat and/or drink or refusal to eat and/or drink.
  • Personal Laundry
    • Do laundry as required daily.
  • Tenant’s Room
    • Assist the tenant to tidy, dust, and make up their bedroom suite, encouraging the tenant to do as much as possible thus maintaining their independence and self-esteem.
    • Sanitizes the bathroom.
    • Ensure the room is left in neat and comfortable position involving the tenant in decision-making.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Professionalism
    • Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to residents, staff and facility operations.
    • Practices in a manner that supports the Respectful Workplace Policy
    • Participates in mandatory annual education.
    • Work collaboratively with all staff as required.
Your Education And Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Valid Food Handlers Certificate
  • Experience with Older Adults with Dementia
  • Able to read, write and speak English.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to assist tenants in a manner that preserves dignity and promotes independence.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and respond appropriately when interacting with the tenant, or tenant’s family, and visitors.
  • Ability to build and maintain friendly, reciprocal, and warm relationships with the individual and groups.
  • Ability to flex and adapt to changes and/or situations based on meeting tenant needs and facility operations.
  • Ability to recognize, document, and report changes in a tenant’s ability to function day-to-day including cognitive and/or physical changes.
  • Ability to promote and practice safe work habits to reduce the potential for injury of self and/or others.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, comfortable, and well-organized unit.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for maintaining and enhancing current skills and knowledge regarding dementia care.
  • Physically and mentally able to perform all duties of the role.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months before the start of employment.
