Technical Support Engineer - Mining Technology

Job Description

This is a position based in Calgary, AB that requires regular travel. This is not IT support. This is a mining instrumentation support position with travel for field installation, repair, and maintenance of radar systems, including electrical and mechanical components and generators, and requires working outdoors in random weather conditions.

Position Summary

Install, commission, maintain and troubleshoot IDS GeoRadar IBIS ground‑based radar systems that track slope stability for mining and civil‑engineering customers. Provide hands‑on training and 24/7 technical support to ensure safe, reliable system performance.

Key Responsibilities
Field Service
  • Install, configure, maintain, and decommission IBIS radar systems and ancillary hardware
  • Perform routine inspections, firmware/software upgrades and on‑site repairs.
  • Service small diesel generators and electric jack systems.
  • Identify and repair electrical, mechanical, networking and software faults.
  • Log all case details in Salesforce; write clear service and incident reports.
  • Manage spare‑parts stock; prepare and track shipments to and from customer sites or the factory.
Customer Support & Training
  • Deliver on‑site and remote training for hardware, software and data analysis.
  • Take part in a scheduled 24/7 on‑call rotation in order to diagnose and resolve issues via phone, email, and or remote access.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Escalate recurring issues to second support; help develop troubleshooting guides & training materials.
  • Collaboration with other divisions in order to make necessary improvements to our processes.
Office-based tasks
  • Test, diagnose, and repair faulty equipment and components returned from customer sites.
  • Perform functional testing on repaired components prior to release to the logistics department for shipment.
  • Maintain accurate repair and testing records in Salesforce and other tracking systems.
  • Assist with inventory management, including tracking repaired components and ensuring stock accuracy.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree in electrical, mechanical, automotive, industrial automation, geoscience and/or related field.

Experience

  • 2+ years in field service, equipment repair or similar technical support role.

Technical

  • Proficiency troubleshooting electrical circuits, IT/network connectivity and Windows based software.
  • Ability to read schematics, diagrams and technical manuals.
  • Experience with small diesel engines for diagnostics and repairs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication, customer service mindset, independent problem solver, and experience with Microsoft Office tools.

Work & Travel

  • Able to work outdoors in all weather, lift up to 50 lbs, and travel ≥ 50 % — often on short notice, weekends or holidays.

Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license (ability to tow a utility trailer) and passport.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of structural geology, geological principles, and their applications for slope movement analysis.
  • Network configuration / troubleshooting expertise.
  • Small diesel engine maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with CRM style platforms.
  • OSHA or MSHA certification.1 year of experience in the mining industry.
  • Experience with towing utility trailers.
Work Environment
  • Active mine sites and remote locations; exposure to weather, noise, dust, and heavy equipment.
  • Office hours Monday–Friday 08:00–16:00 when not on site.
  • Occasional overseas travel (e.g., Europe, Latin America) for training or projects.
