Overview

BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. (BWXT NEC), with nearly 500 workers across Peterborough, Toronto, and Arnprior, supplies nuclear fuel and fuel channel components, services, equipment and parts for the CANDU nuclear power industry. BWXT NEC is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling. BWXT NEC has designed automated systems for 24/7 on-power refueling of CANDU reactors and supports carbon-free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

The Peterborough site is the primary location for this role. The team is part of the Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group, which addresses system-level design across multi-disciplinary engineering groups including I&C, software and mechanical engineering.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Systems Engineering Manager, the Systems Engineer Team Lead will set the technical direction for the overall project and act as the main technical interface to internal and external customers. Responsibilities center on system-level design for Fuel Handling sub-systems, tooling, medical isotope systems and remote delivery machines, with emphasis on requirements management, FMEA, testing and commissioning planning and execution, SAT-based training, and adherence to customer ECC processes.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitate the preparation of proper plans and schedules (level 3) with individual contributors. Take ownership of the cost/schedule commitments of your team
  • Create and enforce the use of Task Definition Forms (TDFs) for work assignments
  • Provide leadership and direction of design activities in conjunction with the technical counselors. Measure and drive job scope control with individuals to improve overall performance.
  • Maintain task surveillance through active engagement with your team and driving accurate work planning through consistent meetings
  • Maintain team and individual allocation targets, enforce budget adherence and review project budgets and runout estimates as necessary
  • Actively participate with FM in resource planning, recruitment, interviewing and onboarding.
  • Prepare and rollout team goals, track performance of team and deliver mid-year and end of year performance reviews
  • Attend weekly leadership meetings with FM and TLs, conduct bi-weekly team meetings, approve teams weekly timecards
  • Define, manage and lead system-level design requirements with the use of formal management tools.
  • Define, manage and lead interfaces and scope between discipline specific design areas (mechanical, I&C and software).
  • Prepare, verify and/or approve system-level design documentation.
  • Construct process level and/or component level design FMEA in conjunction with the design team.
  • Lead project level testing and commissioning documentation or execution
  • Prepare and/or verify project level deliverables including but not limited to evaluations, reports, and assessments
  • Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
  • Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, escalate resources needs as required.
  • Provide overall Project Technical Leadership (PTL) duties for projects as required.
  • Contribute to and lead process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross functional internal teams.
  • Take an active role and responsibility in driving proposal development and review including scope review and estimate preparation as well as technical and product presentations to the customer. Lead proposals as assigned Proposal Estimate Lead (PEL) roles as required. Assist FM in the review and approval of proposals and estimates up to 300 hours.
  • Proactive and timely identification of project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership and/or executive team as required.
  • Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of design activities including, technical review and verification of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.
  • Provide assurance regarding health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.
Knowledge & Experience
  • B.A.Sc. in Engineering.
  • Holds a current PEO license.
  • Typically requires 10 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, or other highly regulated and process based design.
  • Typically requires 3 years’ experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability in helping lead engineering projects and a key design team member for complex projects over their complete EPC life cycles.
  • Demonstrable experience with project schedules, working within budgets, financial metrics and other project management methodologies.
  • Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing
  • Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, I&C, software design and manufacturing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, demonstrated leadership skills, strong technical experience and the ability to work in a team.
  • Flexibility to work remotely on short-term customer site assignment.
