Job Summary

The Supervisor, Work Equipment – Canada is responsible for ensuring the operation and maintenance of CN’s equipment for Engineering. The role is accountable for maintaining the line of road by stabilizing costs through standard practices and procedures. The incumbent implements system wide best practices and communicates common strategy across the system. The position drives consistency in work equipment operation.

Main Responsibilities
  • Ensure safety, compliance, and focus on implementation
  • Lead the operation of shops and territory
  • Lead unionized staff to ensure maintenance and repair work on CN’s equipment is performed safely and efficiently
  • Provide a safe work environment based on consistent policies, procedures, and training methodologies
  • Furnish reliable equipment fleet through maintenance and repair processes
  • Ensure that equipment is available to the end user to meet program schedules and track maintenance requirements
  • Stabilize overall operating costs for equipment repair and maintenance through implementing unit cost analysis categorized under equipment type
  • Build, maintain, and motivate an effective team
  • Monitor cost of labour, inventory, and materials to ensure cost control and asset utilization are implemented
  • Understand and control cost center's monthly as well as the annual budget
Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with shift work, including irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires regular travel (75%) at times without advance notice. The role must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The role requires being available on-call 24 / 7 to respond to critical incidences.

Cost Control and Budget Management
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in cost control and budget management or related industry
  • Experience supervising Mechanics in a shop or field setting
  • Experience in similar working conditions and regulatory and safety environment*
  • Experience overseeing budgets*
  • Experience supervising unionized workforce, including interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, and discipline*
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education / Certification / Designation
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
  • Licensed Heavy-Duty Mechanic*
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce or Business Diploma*
  • Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) qualified*
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
