Position title: Supervisor, Operations Control Centre (OCC)
Reports to: Senior Manager, Operations Control Center (OCC)
Department: Operations & Maintenance
Direct Reports: OCC Control Room Operators
Job Summary
The primary function of the OCC supervisor is to oversee and supervise the control room operators as well as the general day to day operations of the room. Overssee connecting new operating facilities into the OCC monitoring system and processes, provide employee training (ongoing and special training days) for systems and software used in the OCC, participate in NERC compliance audits and reviews. Drive and contribute to continuing documentation efforts within the OCC.
Main Responsibilities
- Oversee staff: Supervise all Control Room Operators within the control centre. Ensuring employee engagement and career growth for all within. Lead the team by example and foster a culture of success.
- Operational Duties: Supervise real-time operations of utility systems. Ensure quick action of the team to events occurring on facilities. Ensure established protocol is always followed.
- Continuous improvement: Ensure continuous improvement via procedures and process improvements. Work with different parties within the OCC to find ways to increase efficiency.
- Compliance: Use of best practices and benchmarks to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards. Uses industry recognized approaches, methodologies, and techniques specific to competency areas.
Functional Competencies
- Leadership and team management – Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of control centre operators. Provide guidance, training, and performance feedback to team members. Foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team.
- Problem Solving – Identify problems, analyse possible solutions and decide on the best course of action.
- Deep understanding of Power Generation and Protocol – Familiarity and understanding of such systems to ensure all staff has the sufficient knowledge and tools to monitor and operate power generators and foster compliance in the room.
- Project Management skills – Experience with the management of projects that require effective organization of resources to ensure smooth workflow and desirable results.
- Compliance – Perform duties in compliance with NERC Reliability Standards (CIP, COM, PER, PRC, TOP, and others as applicable) for North American facilities. Support compliance with international standards and local market operator rules for facilities outside of North America.
Job Requirements
- At least 2-5 years’ experience in the renewables market
- 3 years of Engineering, Operations, IT or other utility experience
- BA or BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related discipline or equivalent experience or technical training.
- Tertiary education in a relevant field, or equivalent demonstrated experience
- Knowledge of operating systems and network topology.
- Ability to use MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point and Access is required.
- Experience working with SCADA or Automation systems preferred.
- Intermediate to moderate knowledge of one or more of the following: Electric Distribution Operations; Distribution Automation; Distribution Engineering.
- Knowledge of telecommunications systems desired
- Ability to be self-managing and to relish the challenges of problem solving.
- Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to develop positive relationships with vendors and clients. Document work practices appropriately.
- Fluent English speaker
- Strong analytical skills and confidence in Microsoft Suite
- Proven track record of being a self-starter who can both work flexibly and autonomously.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex data succinctly
- Maintain situational awareness to support the reliability of the Bulk Electric System (BES) and equivalent systems worldwide.
- Protect Critical Cyber Assets (CCAs) and follow cyber and physical security protocols under CIP standards, ensuring global applicability of best practices.
- Participate in NERC and equivalent international training, drills, and evidence gathering for audits.
- Adhere to established operational procedures, work instructions, and ISO 9001 quality management standards across all global facilities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by reporting process nonconformities, identifying root causes, and suggesting corrective/preventive actions applicable worldwide.
- Maintain accurate documentation, event logs, and evidence trails to support ISO 9001 audits and quality reviews across multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
- Support OCC initiatives in developing standardized global operating procedures, ensuring consistency while respecting local regulations.
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards in daily activities.
- Contribute to maintaining a culture of reliability, operational discipline, and compliance excellence, regardless of geographic region.
- Assist in root cause analysis of system disturbances, outages, etc. across global operations.
- Conduct other duties as assigned.
Other Requirements
- Travel may be required from time to time.
- Possible call-ins could occur during emergency situations.
