PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As the Supervisor Signals & Communications (S&C), you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and reliability of S&C equipment and systems, which are essential for supporting the efficient movement of trains and equipment across the network. Your key responsibilities will include conducting electrical and mechanical testing of S&C equipment, inspecting and commissioning new installations, and overseeing modifications to existing systems, all while maintaining high standards of safety and operational excellence.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Coordinate activities between maintenance and construction teams to ensure seamless operations, optimize productivity, and deliver high efficiency in workflows
  • Evaluate and approve the entry into service of new or modified S&C systems, including voice recorders, narrow band systems, and data circuits, ensuring compliance and operational readiness
  • Mentor and coach junior S&C employees by providing technical guidance and building expertise to enhance team capability and performance
  • Maintain and update the S&C Alerts database, ensure accurate documentation of field action taken and promote robust record-keeping processes
  • Investigate and resolve radio interference issues impacting CPKC radio systems, ensuring reliable communication across rail operations
  • Oversee day-to-day operations at the Radio Shop, manage workflows, prioritize work activities, and sustain operational excellence
  • Collaborate proactively with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders, such as local municipal governments, Radio Amateurs of Canada, Transport Canada and other railroads, to ensure system compliance and resolve any issues efficiently
  • Conduct electrical installations and mechanical testing of S&C equipment, diagnose and repair systems to uphold safety and operational standards
  • Demonstrate adaptability and dependability in supporting a 24/7 operating environment, responding promptly to emergencies to minimize service disruptions
  • Operate in a 100% field-based position, with exposure to diverse and changing working conditions both indoors and outdoors

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or general equivalency; an electronics technology degree/certification from an accredited technical institute is a value add
  • Minimum of 2 years of combined experience in signal construction and maintenance in railroad industry
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong understanding of CPKC’s Red Book requirements, required practices, standard plans, and signal equipment & principals
  • Working knowledge of both signals and communications circuit designs, to assist in troubleshooting
  • Knowledge and comprehension of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Collective Agreement
  • Proficiency with SAP, Rail Tasker and Microsoft Office applications (Excel and Word)
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and successful information exchange

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
