Job summary

A real estate investment trust in Toronto is seeking a Summer Student for Development to assist in planning application submissions and monitor planning updates. The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Planning, Engineering, or a related field, and a passion for contributing to development projects. Responsibilities include supporting development budgets and performing various administrative duties. This is a full-time position from May to August with a competitive salary range.

Location: 22 St. Clair Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario, M4T 2S5

Position Title: Summer Student, Development
Term Length: Summer 2026 (May – August)
Work Model: 5 days in office

Position Overview

The Development summer student will work closely under a Manager, Development, and will be primarily accountable for providing support in various aspects of the planning, design and coordination related to Choice Properties’ development projects. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic and motivated individual eager to learn and contribute in a dynamic setting.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of planning application submissions, including collecting signatures and processing documents.
  • Monitor municipal notices, planning updates, and council agendas relevant to Choice Properties’ portfolio.
  • Support in tracking development approvals, permits, and regulatory updates.
  • Perform zoning checks and gather land development statistics.
  • Support the preparation of RFPs and coordinate consultant contracts.
  • Assist with internal and external project reporting, including tracking milestones, approvals, and key deliverables.
  • Aid in pushing corporate sustainability objectives through project pipeline.
  • Support tracking of development budgets, consultant invoices, and soft costs.
  • Perform various administrative duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Planning, Engineering, Architecture or related field (completed or near completion).
  • Familiarity with typical planning approvals process.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build strong working relationships with other departments and with people at various levels of the organization.
  • Works well in a cross functional team environment and has a positive outlook and attitude.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PPT, Project, OneNote).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present.
  • Strong business acumen considered highly important.
