Overview

The Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) is seeking a Temporary Part-Time Student Page employee to work at our Qualicum Beach Branch.

This temporary position will end on August 31, 2026.

The weekly schedule will be approximately 4 to 10 hours per week.

This position will appeal to high school, home schooled, and university students. Hours may include mornings, after school, evenings and weekends. The successful candidate will be an outgoing individual who takes pride in being organized – accurately shelving materials and completing routine library tasks in a timely manner.

Skills and Characteristics
  • Shelves and organizes returned library materials.
  • Sorts, stacks, and shelf-reads to maintain accurate order.
  • Pulls duplicate, damaged, or soiled items as directed.
  • Assists with basic material processing such as stamping, labeling, inserting security strips, and covering items.
  • Prepares withdrawn materials for recycling or book sales.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy public environment.
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete routine tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to interact respectfully and courteously with colleagues and the public.
  • Basic oral and written communication skills.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry boxes, push book carts, and perform light cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Willingness to perform repetitive and routine tasks reliably and efficiently.
Required Education and Experience
  • Currently enrolled in high school or post-secondary education, with proof of enrollment as required.
  • Demonstrated reliability in attending scheduled shifts.
  • Previous experience in a customer service, retail, or library environment is an asset but not required.
