Job description
Overview

Amazon's Measurement, AdTech, and Data Science (MADS) team is seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead a high-performing engineering team in Toronto. This team is responsible for building the core measurement and modeling capabilities that serve all of Amazon Ads, helping advertisers understand the true impact of their advertising investments.

As the leader of this team, you will own the technical vision and product roadmap for measurement services, working closely with cross-functional partners including Product, UX, Science, and other engineering teams. You will drive innovations in modeled measurement—leveraging state-of-the-art machine learning and Generative AI models to generate accurate measurement signals where user identity is unavailable. Additionally, you will lead efforts to leverage transformer models to build GenAI foundational models that support Amazon Ads broadly, starting with measurement applications.

About the team: This team builds the core causal measurement and modeling capabilities serving all of Amazon Ads. We work with diverse systems and languages, combining AWS services like EMR and DynamoDB with Spark and Scala. We leverage generative AI tools to accelerate development, testing, and deployment cycles. We are a highly motivated, collaborative, and fun-loving team with an entrepreneurial spirit and bias for action.

Responsibilities
  • Own the technical vision and direction for measurement services, identifying and mitigating risks while constructing project schedules and preparing status reports
  • Drive architecture decisions for systems that process petabyte-scale data and serve real-time measurement insights
  • Lead the development of ML and GenAI-powered measurement solutions that provide accurate attribution in privacy-constrained environments
  • Ensure high standards for operational excellence, as products reach hundreds of millions of customers around the world and run 24x7x365
  • Build and grow an engineering team that delivers results, wearing multiple hats from coaching individuals to leading technical discussions, recruiting, and establishing processes
  • Develop more leaders within the group, creating a creative atmosphere that lets engineers innovate while holding them accountable for making smart decisions and delivering results
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence and customer obsession
  • Collaborate with Applied Scientists, Data Scientists, and Economists who are advancing measurement science and causal inference
  • Work closely with Product and UX partners to ensure focus on delivering the right product for customers
  • Partner with Science teams on improving modeled measurement accuracy and developing GenAI foundational models
A day in the life

We measure advertising effectiveness through sophisticated causal measurement and modeling techniques, including rigorous scientific experiments and machine learning. Our mission is to enable advertisers to optimize ad spend and allocate budgets effectively by providing accurate, actionable, and timely causal measurement across all Amazon ad products. We combine deterministic and modeled measurement techniques to produce estimates that are fast, precise, and actionable. Using AWS big data and machine learning technologies, we process over 50 billion new events daily, operating petabyte-scale clusters.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
