The Battery Storage Facility Site Manager (Operations) is directly responsible for the physical and financial performance of one of Northland’s new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities and brings both technical and business expertise to drive operational excellence in key areas of facility operations.
The project site is located near Brooks, Alberta, and role requires regular attendance at the facility, however there may be situation where some remote work is acceptable. The role will also require some travel, withing Alberta, inter provincially and potentially internationally.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety
- Working with the North American Health and Safety (H&S) Team, develop site-specific health and safety plans
- Ensure that all health and safety regulations, policies, and procedures are being followed at site and maintain required records (training, JHAs, LOTO forms, incident reports, etc.)
- Ensure required PPE is available and maintained as required
- Ensure site equipment is maintained for safety by overseeing maintenance activities
- Participate in regular site safety audits
- Drive a positive safety culture
Environmental compliance
- Working with the North American Environmental leads, develop a site‑specific environmental plan and obligations tracker
- Working with the North American Environmental lead, ensure that the site maintains compliant with environmental permits and regulations
- Regularly review site activities to ensure compliance is being maintained and evidence is being collected, putting in place any necessary proactive measures
- Submit incident reports appropriately if/as required
Construction oversight and turnover
- Perform regular walkdowns of in‑progress and completed work
- Observe installation of critical systems (safety, control, environmental) ensuring familiarity with them from the construction stage as appropriate
- Participate in commissioning exercises to understand challenges and fixes made which may inform/impact future operations
- Work with construction to ensure punch list is being adequately developed and tracked
- Ensure turnover or documentation relevant to operations is received
- Develop work orders in CMMS per OEM equipment maintenance recommendations and work orders for end‑of‑warranty inspections as appropriate
- Manage turnover process ensuring Ops needs are met (e.g. ensuring red‑lines/as‑builts are available for control wiring, field wiring, etc.)
Oversight of market registration
- Stay informed on the progress of market registration
- Understand on‑going market obligations
Physical asset management
- Takes overall responsibility for site O&M
- Promptly address emergent issues to create plans to restore generation capacity and equipment performance
- Proactively works to drive site physical performance by regularly reviewing fault pareto charts, equipment monitoring systems/reports, equipment performance reports; identifies and prioritizes risks and issues and develops plans to address them
- Strategically reviews maintenance plans to best address risks and issues considering technical and commercial viewpoints
- Assists to develop long‑term asset plans and risk management plans, for example with respect to lifetime extension of operating assets
- Works with the compliance and reliability team to ensure compliance with grid and market rules (for example, applicable NERC/reliability standards, AESO market rules, etc.)
Commercial asset management
- Manages O&M contracts to ensure Northland’s interests are maintained; works with procurement and legal teams when necessary to optimize and enforce contracts
- Together with site leads, takes responsibility for developing facility budgets that are responsive to the needs of the facility and business appropriately balancing risks with business returns
- Assist with negotiations on key contracts, including possible development/M&A opportunities from time‑to‑time, providing necessary technical input and important context for other members of the Northland team
- Works with the insurance, accounting, and project finance teams to address commercial items related to site financing, events, reporting, etc.
Market operations
- Understand the relevant contracts and various parties involved in bidding/offering and dispatching the BESS and how facility operations interfaces with these parties
- On an ongoing basis, supply the required facility information to the various market agents acting on behalf of the facility
Stakeholder Relationships
- Take the lead on managing project stakeholder relationships including with project partners, first nations, landowners and neighbors.

Qualifications and experience
- At least 5 years of experience in power generation operations relevant to the above profile
- P.Eng, CET or other technical designation strongly preferred that demonstrates technical knowledge and accountability
- Demonstrated leadership ability and the ability to foster a collaborative environment; you can provide examples of where you have led by example and driven operational excellence
- Technical experience: an understanding generation balance‑of‑plant equipment including operation, preventative maintenance, and addressing failures
- Commercial experience
- Experience with negotiating and/or enforcing contract maintenance, supply and other types of contracts (from Owner or OEM side)
- Experience developing budgets and business cases
- Demonstrated understanding of industrial safety, safety leadership, and commitment to creating a safe work environment
- Demonstrated experience complying with external regulations and working within corporate compliance systems
