A leading educational institution in Toronto is looking for a Sessional Lecturer to teach a course on Technology, Engineering, and Global Development. Description:

The course examines the role of technology and engineering in global development through lectures, readings, case studies, and analysis of key technologies. Topics include history and theories of international development, major government and non-government players, emerging models (social entrepreneurship, microfinance, risk capital), social venture capital and philanthropy, financial markets, environmental and resource considerations/sustainable development, technology diffusion models, and appropriate technologies.

Estimated TA support: 108 TA hours

Course Schedule: Mondays 6-8 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesdays 6-8 p.m.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1 – April 30, 2026

Stipend: $12,930 inclusive of vacation pay

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in global development and technology, with focus on engineering and technology addressing needs of base of the pyramid populations in low/medium income countries.
  • Experience across engineering areas such as structures, sanitation, biotechnology, health technologies, clean water, food and agriculture.
  • Ability to describe current projects using personal experience or case materials; understanding of key players (multilateral institutions such as the UN and World Bank, government aid organizations, foundations, alternative funding models).
  • Understanding of entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship concepts, business models, value chains, sustainability, frugal innovation, appropriate technologies, and needs assessment.
  • Previous teaching experience and/or research in the field is highly desirable.

Duties:

  • Prepare for and deliver 12 weeks of lectures and tutorials.
  • Set assignments and term work assessments, and final assessment as appropriate.
  • Collate and submit marks; handle petitions after final marks; communicate with students inside and outside class times.
  • Prepare a deferred examination if required.
