Job description

Ehvert Mission Critical, a business unit within Salas O’Brien, is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to lead the design of complex structural systems for hyperscale and AI data centres across North America. This is a remote position within an international engineering firm recognized for its innovation and expertise in mission-critical infrastructure.

Our projects involve large-scale, high-demand facilities with complex structural, electrical, mechanical, automation, and security systems, often exceeding 100 MW per facility and up to 500 MW per site.

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across all phases of structural design and delivery - from the development of structural concepts, advanced analysis, and detailed engineering calculations, to interdisciplinary coordination, technical reviews, and construction support. You will act as a technical authority within the structural discipline, guiding design decisions, ensuring code compliance and quality, and mentoring junior engineers. You will collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, and contractors to develop integrated solutions that meet the stringent performance, reliability, and serviceability requirements of mission‑critical facilities.

This role offers the opportunity to work on complex, high‑impact data centre projects for global clients such as Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, and Google, while advancing your career within a dynamic, technically driven, and highly collaborative team environment.

What We Offer
  • Experience in a high‑tech industry within an international firm
  • Unique, cutting‑edge data centre projects
  • Comprehensive training
  • Professional development support
  • Supportive management and a collaborative team environment
  • Career growth potential
  • Ability to work from home
  • Comprehensive compensation package
  • Competitive employee benefits: Health insurance, Life insurance, Short‑term and long‑term disability, many other benefits, including PTO.
  • Opportunity to participate in the company’s retirement plan
  • Stock ownership / synthetic equity options
What You Will Do
  • Develop and design gravity and lateral structural systems for mission‑critical facilities, including foundations, steel and concrete superstructures, and wind‑ and seismic‑resisting systems.
  • Perform advanced structural analysis and design, including load determination and combinations (dead, live, wind, seismic, snow, equipment, and thermal loads), load path development, and load takedown.
  • Conduct finite element analysis and advanced modelling for complex structural systems and atypical geometries.
  • Design foundations and substructures, including shallow and deep foundations, slab‑on‑grade systems, and mat foundations, considering geotechnical constraints and bearing capacity.
  • Address mission‑critical structural requirements such as high equipment loads, vibration control, structural robustness and redundancy, and phased construction or expansion of live facilities.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, design criteria, schematic designs, and detailed construction documents.
  • Act as Lead Structural Engineer and, where applicable, Engineer of Record, responsible for technical direction, code compliance, and overall design integrity.
  • Review and approve calculations, models, and drawings prepared by other engineers to ensure quality, consistency, and adherence to standards.
  • Coordinate with architects, MEP engineers, contractors, and fabricators to ensure structural systems integrate seamlessly with building, mechanical, and process requirements.
  • Utilise structural analysis, detailing, and BIM tools (e.g., RISA, ETABS, RAM, Robot, Tekla, SDS2, Revit, AutoCAD) for design, documentation, and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and coordination meetings with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals and shop drawings, and performing site visits as required.
  • Mentor and guide middle‑level engineers, supporting their technical development and ensuring best practices are followed.
What We Expect
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural specialisation.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in structural engineering design for building or industrial facilities, including experience with complex structural systems.
  • Strong experience with structural analysis and design using finite element methods and advanced analysis software.
  • High proficiency in structural design and analysis tools such as RISA (strongly preferred), ETABS, RAM, STAAD, Robot, Tekla, SDS2, Revit, and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated expertise in structural calculations, including gravity and lateral systems, load combinations, vibration analysis, and foundation design.
  • Deep knowledge of building codes and standards, including NBCC and relevant provincial codes, as well as familiarity with US codes such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI.
  • Experience working with steel and reinforced concrete structures; experience with industrial or mission‑critical facilities is a strong asset.
  • Ability to evaluate and integrate geotechnical information into structural design, including bearing capacity and settlement considerations.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or PE in the US - required; eligibility for or possession of a US PE license is considered a strong advantage.
  • Proven ability to lead structural design efforts, provide technical oversight, and take responsibility for design quality and compliance.
  • Strong coordination skills and experience working in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project and client sites across Canada and the United States, as required.
  • A proactive, detail‑oriented mindset with a strong sense of technical ownership and accountability.
  • Authorization to work in Canada
