Reporting to the Structural Section Manager, the Senior Structural Engineer contributes structural engineering knowledge and analysis during the design phase, with a focus on water retaining structures. The project mix includes building and non-building structures, in collaboration with HDR’s Water, Resources, and Transportation Business Groups. The role involves working on multiple projects in various locations and may include construction contract administration, site inspections, condition assessments, peer reviews, and quality reviews. The successful candidate will mentor teammates and support the development of design and construction documentation processes. Common paths for progression include technical specialization and project management.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in structural engineering; resolve problems of greater scope and complexity
  • Plan and develop projects or design activities
  • Develop project deliverables, organize and supervise, and seal work of medium to large teams
  • Support a wide variety of projects requiring Owner’s Engineering, consulting, and detailed design
  • Participate in procurement and construction specifications, design reviews, and technical assessment of construction progress
  • Perform complex assignments with judgment in evaluating and modifying standard engineering techniques
  • Serve as Project Manager on larger projects (note: project management is not the sole focus)
  • Produce and coordinate multiple projects concurrently
  • Establish client relations and participate in marketing, contractual, design and production meetings
  • Coordinate staffing and workload to complete documents on schedule
  • Conduct schematic, design development, and contract document work sessions at project sites with project managers and other professionals
  • Perform other duties as needed
Scope of Work
  • Water and wastewater structures
  • Concrete, steel, and masonry structures
  • Scope may extend to other civil and line structures, including transportation, water, and waste management projects
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering (preferred)
  • Proficiency with finite element software (e.g., SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE) and working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, BIM 360, Bluebeam
  • Expert knowledge of local and national building codes in Canada and the US (e.g., ASCE7, NBCC)
  • Strong communication, listening, and mentoring skills; ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments
  • Good leadership and organizational skills
  • Experience in coding, programming, and design automation is a plus
  • Experience with ACI 350 (and/or CSA S900) related to water retaining structures is a plus
  • Experience with structural condition assessment, repair, and rehabilitation
  • Experience with Risa 3D, RAM, and STAAD PRO is a plus
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience related to building design
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the position location (e.g., PE or P.Eng)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar software
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts; ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry, and wood
  • Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis
  • Experience with architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firms
