About the role

Join the Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP) as a Senior Specialist, Multi-Unit Underwriting (Housing Program). In this role, you will be part of a transformative initiative under the National Housing Strategy. You will leverage your financial expertise and relationship-building skills to drive the development of much-needed rental housing across the country.

What you'll do:

  • Apply sound judgement and decision-making practices based on complex conducted financial analysis while making recommendations.
  • Act as a direct lender under the ACLP program: review, prioritize and approve loan applications while assessing financial viability.
  • Identify and manage risk by exercising due diligence while reviewing and approving complex requests and monitoring the quality of results.
  • Lead underwriting for large-scale projects, exercising delegated financial authority.
  • Review and approve recommendations from Specialists, ensuring alignment with CMHC’s standards.
  • Demonstrate leadership by coaching team members and providing guidance on complex, high-value, or high-risk financial requests, including the use of technical financial tools.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients to understand their needs, objectives, and explore opportunities.
  • Work in partnership with clients, stakeholders, and various levels of government by offering advice, support and alternative solutions.
  • Manage politically sensitive issues by demonstrating critical thinking, judgment and know-how to find solutions.
  • Implement process improvements for increased efficiencies and enhanced customer experience.

What you should have:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field related to real estate such as business administration, accounting, finance or commerce, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of seven(7) years of experience in construction financing, real estate, financial markets or credit risk analysis for Multi-Unit properties.
  • Demonstrated experience working with financial viability and loan approvals.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing, evaluating and prioritizing loans
  • Specialized knowledge of housing financing.
  • Expert knowledge of underwriting theories, principles and processes.
  • The ability to present ideas in a clear and convincing manner in order to have proposals or plans accepted.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective relationship and to motivate others, influence and develop their potential.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey decisions and address objections.


It would be great if you also had:

  • Experience or knowledge in property management, real estate appraisal, property inspection, or real estate law is considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of a professional association designation such as CRF, AACI, CFA, or CPM.
  • Experience in building reports and/or in using statistical analysis software such as MS Excel.
