The Ontario Cannabis Store provides safe, responsible access to recreational cannabis for adults 19 and older. We operate the sole legal online store for recreational cannabis in Ontario and are the provincial wholesaler of cannabis for private retail stores.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer – Central Systems to join our team!

The Software Engineer is a senior member of the IT Development team, responsible for development of individual projects/applications within our Central Systems area. They are highly proficient in specific applications/technology and competent in identifying emerging technologies that may benefit this domain. They are also skilled in collaborating with other Software Engineers to problem‑solve technical issues.

They foster relationships with Architects, the S&T team, and business leads in the OCS to understand project design and deliver on all technology requirements. They execute development plans according to solution design plans, work with the QA team to ensure no defects in promoted code, collaborate with the QA and DevOps team in transition planning to the support team, and act as L3 support for completed development work.

About Your Day
  • Develops and provides effort estimates for design and development activities across their area of expertise
  • Refactor and migrate legacy code and systems to new cutting‑edge technologies
  • Practiced ability to influence strategy within the application domain and related domains
  • Translate functional requirements and wireframes into working technology
  • Deploy established development tools, guidelines, and conventions and advocate solutions for the application/solution
  • Develops real‑time and batch interface programs and scalable and high‑performance interfaces
  • Writes programs to extract, translate, load, and verify data using an enterprise messaging layer (i.e. Kafka)
  • Develops programs to address requirements for data conversions and other data transformations
  • Ability to configure SaaS, COTS (Commercial Off‑The‑Shelf) Software with training
  • Participates in system and application upgrades and other support activities as needed
  • Assists users in solving programs and answers systems and application‑related questions
  • Adheres to programming standards when performing analysis, writing documentation, and testing components
  • Develop code utilizing modern development practices such as Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment, and agile methodologies
  • Develop Unit test cases and validate test results during testing
  • Develops documentation for the programs written or modified
  • Provide input for training materials
  • Participate in triage meetings involving all the required stakeholders, to discuss actions on any defects and issues the testing team has found during testing
  • Investigate, resolve and Escalate problems and develop recommendations for resolution
  • Identifies need for technical assistance to help in problem resolution
About You
  • Post‑Secondary education in Computer Science, Information Technology or related areas OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Significant experience in Systems Integration and Application Development within the Retail or B2B Systems industry
  • Certification in Microsoft Dynamics AX and D365 is an asset
  • 6+ years of experience with development, databases and data warehouses
  • Proficiency in working with widely used DBMS platforms like Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, or CosmosDB, including advanced knowledge of SQL Server Engine architecture and SQL Server Integration Services
  • Cloud experience (Azure preferred) and proven experience with Azure Synapse, Logic Apps, Azure Data Factory and Azure Functions
  • Strong SQL skills for writing and optimizing queries to ensure efficient data retrieval and manipulation. Expertise in:
    • Tables and Views
    • Indexing (including column store indexes), query execution plans, performance tuning and troubleshooting
    • Relational data modeling (ERD)
    • T‑SQL development would be an asset
    • Stored procedures
    • Triggers
    • Performance tuning
    • Query execution plan analysis
    • Statistics IO
  • Ability to design and implement OLTP database schemas, considering data normalization, de‑normalization, and best practices for relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience in logical and physical database design and relational data modeling (ERD), as well as data warehousing and Azure data / delta lakes
  • Familiarity with RESTful API principles, including how to interact with APIs from within the database environments
  • Proficiency in scripting languages to automate routine tasks, such as backups, data migrations, and monitoring (e.g. Spark, Python, PySpark)
  • Skilled in monitoring database performance and able to diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) to track changes to database schemas, scripts, and configurations
  • Ability to provide production support and respond quickly
  • Comfortable to use Jira, Confluence, Zeplin, and InVision tools in day‑to‑day activities
  • Ability to work in Agile methodology
  • Strong analytical data‑driven thinking skills

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $100,000–$120,000. This is a pay grade 7 role, with a salary range of $82,623.96–$123,507.59. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
