Senior Social Scientist

We are seeking a Senior Social Scientist to support a wide variety of infrastructure (e.g., transit, road/highway, power, etc.) and other environmental assessment projects. Our work includes delivering keystone projects throughout their lifecycle: from early assessment of constraints to strategic development of regulatory approvals processes, to environmental monitoring, and compliance management through construction and operations. Our team works collaboratively within projects to gain social acceptance and manage our clients' commitments to the environment and sustainable development. The ideal candidate will be a motivated, detail-oriented, self-starter with over 15 years of experience with environmental assessments and consulting services in Canada.

This role will be based in Toronto, Ontario. Occasional travel within Canada may be required.

Your role
  • Leading the assessment of project impacts on the socio-economic environment, including consideration of regional and local economies, community services and infrastructure, land use and recreation, and community well‑being and safety.
  • Working alongside senior project managers in carrying out environmental assessments and permitting within a variety of sectors.
  • Leading baseline socio‑economic studies, including desktop research, surveys, interviews, etc.
  • Collaborating with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments.
  • Overseeing and directing junior and intermediate professionals in the execution of tasks, including providing senior review.
  • Developing and maintaining project/task schedules and budgets for project components, and monitoring project progress, work hours, budgets and expenditures using project scheduling and cost control tools.
  • Supporting business development efforts, including potential client/prospect identification, proposal writing and client‑facing activities.
  • Participating in industry events through presentations, papers at conferences or through membership in industry organizations.
  • Mentoring and supporting the development of junior professionals.
  • Keeping up to date on regulatory changes and advising project staff and clients regarding these changes.
About you
  • University degree in social sciences (Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Regional Planning, Health or Social Sciences, Geography, etc.).
  • Over 15 years of applied experience in the environmental and/or consulting engineering field.
  • Full or provisional membership in a professional body (e.g. Registered Professional Planner (RPP and MCIP); Canadian Environmental Professional (EP); or Project Management Professional (PMP)) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with environmental assessment processes (federal, provincial, and territorial, in particular, the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act is an asset).
  • Knowledge of other relevant environmental legislation and federal/provincial policy.
  • Experience conducting socio‑economic baseline studies and impact assessments.
  • French language skills would be an asset.
  • Valid Class G driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel for short time periods.
