Job description
Overview

AdvantAge Ontario is seeking a full-time Senior Policy Analyst to support Association members through policy analysis, advocacy, information and resources, and education in the areas of long-term care, seniors housing and community services, and other areas of seniors care. The Senior Policy Analyst will report to the Director of Public Policy and demonstrate the organization’s culture and values in all interactions.

Current Role and Responsibilities
  • All policy matters relating to their policy portfolio, including monitoring key developments, and proactively proposing policy responses.
  • Monitoring and conducting detailed analysis on legislative and regulatory changes and developments.
  • Preparing responses, formal submissions, and other materials to government on key initiatives and proposed legislative, regulatory and policy changes.
  • Attending government meetings and advocating on behalf of members at these meetings.
  • Preparing communications to members on sector news, legislative changes, and their impacts on members, informing advocacy, etc.
  • Building relationships with stakeholders, government, and Association members.
  • Assisting the Director in developing federal, provincial, and municipal advocacy strategies.
  • Attending and presenting Association updates at regional meetings across the province.
  • Facilitating and leading advisory groups.
  • Responding to member queries.
  • Conducting research to support submissions, advocacy, and grant proposals.
  • Understanding member issues and needs and ensuring these needs are addressed through advocacy, tools and resources, and education.
  • Assisting the education department in developing webinars and workshops to meet members needs.
Minimum Education
  • Masters degree from an accredited post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in public policy, health care, seniors care, political science, gerontology, or a relevant social science; or an acceptable combination of education and experience necessary to fulfill the requirements.
Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent policy analysis and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in a small team environment and across multiple departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well in writing, condense and summarize complex information, including legislation and research into plain language and with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for impact, to describe AdvantAge Ontario's policy positions and provide recommendations to government.
  • Knowledge of all levels of government and its decision-making processes is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in healthcare policy is required and experience in seniors care is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and presentation skills and capabilities, including facilitating discussions on sensitive policy matters.
  • Demonstrated tact and ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with individuals, organizations, and all levels of government.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities and meeting overlapping deadlines; have excellent organizational abilities and can work independently.
  • Ability to take initiative, be creative, use different lenses to address an issue, and think outside of the box.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • The Senior Policy Analyst does not have direct reports but does oversee students and interns as necessary with other analysts on policy team.
  • The Senior Policy Analyst is responsible for mentoring and coaching students and interns.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Work flexible hours to accommodate services and activities.
  • Represent the Association on committees and / or at meetings.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Attend meetings off site as required.
  • Require registration on the Ontario Lobbyists Registry.
Location

This is primarily a remote role, with some in person meetings at head office and elsewhere in Ontario as required. AdvantAge Ontario reserves the right to change to on site work at the Association's head office at any time.

Travel
  • Provincial travel to other regions to attend meetings is a normal part of the Senior Policy Analyst role.
  • Travel to off-site meetings with government, stakeholders, and members will be required approximately 2 to 4 times per month but may vary.
  • A valid Ontario driver's license and use of a vehicle is required.
