About the Role

Reporting to the Deputy Regional Solicitor, is responsible for providing a wide range of legal services including file management and document review, preparing draft agreements and by-laws for all Regional Departments; conducting searches and registrations; providing transactional support and completing research of case law / legislation / policies in support of requests for legal advice; preparing draft responses and assisting legal counsel in researching and preparing for attendance before the courts and administrative tribunals and boards.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Drafts and prepares documents, agreements and supporting material for all areas of practice in the Legal Services Branch, including litigation, environmental, construction, development, development charges, capital infrastructure and operations, real estate, commercial leasing, municipal and corporate matters.
  • Prepares draft responses on behalf of legal counsel.
  • Conducts legal research and assists legal counsel in preparing documentation for court, administrative tribunals, boards and hearings.
  • Conducts legal research using online legal research databases and other electronic sources.
  • Conducts searches and registrations using Teraview system and corporate search resources.
  • Prepares by-laws for presentation to Council.
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate, from Regional Departments, legal counsel, private sector interests, other municipalities and provincial ministries and agencies.
  • Prepares draft reports to Committee and Council on legal matters for legal counsel.
  • Liaises with provincial and other municipal staff to resolve issues and other matters affecting the Region’s capital and operating projects and activities.
What We Are Looking For
  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in a Law Clerk Program or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Registry / Land Titles procedures and electronic search, document preparation and registration procedures.
  • Thorough working knowledge of key legislation relevant to the practice area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of municipal government structure, policies, processes and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service, communication, team work, initiative / self management and accountability, and flexibility / adaptability.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill in effective planning and problem solving as well as critical and strategic thinking.
  • Advanced research and drafting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and assume carriage of files under the direction of supervising lawyer.
