Description:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Electrical Systems, this position plays an integral role as a member of the electrical team within the Utilities and Building Operations, Facilities and Services Department.

The Senior Electrical Systems Engineer is responsible for planning and directing the operation and maintenance of the University’s (St. George Campus) main high and low voltage electrical distribution systems and maintenance of the building electrical distribution systems. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring designs and changes meet published electrical design standards through project design reviews, factory acceptance tests, site acceptances tests, deficiency walkthroughs, and commissioning activities.

The Senior Electrical Systems Engineer provides electrical engineering services for projects undertaken by the Utilities and Building Operations Section. Projects typically include planning for large electrical equipment maintenance, replacement of aging electrical distribution equipment, electrical load segregation/optimization, re-adjustment of protective systems in high and low voltage distribution systems and analyzing and resolving electrical system breakdowns.

Professional services include all aspects of electrical engineering as defined by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) such as reviewing design, specifications and drawings on renovation projects to determine load requirements and electrical supply, cost effectiveness and compliance; inspecting new building and electrical systems to ensure they adhere to construction and renovation drawings and specifications; recommend corrective action and commissioning of new buildings based on inspection of electrical systems; provide technical expertise to Property Management, Project Management, Design & Engineering, Trades staff, building occupants and external contractors with respect to the operation of electrical equipment, methods of power supply, grounding solutions and maintenance of equipment and contract administration.

The position ensures Ontario Building Code (OBC) compliance on engineering matters, deals with the authorities having jurisdiction and ensures compliance with the University of Toronto Design Standards and other applicable standards and codes.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering with license to practice in the Province of Ontario; registered and in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Experience:

  • Minimum 8 years’ related experience in electrical design and/or maintenance with demonstrated experience working with high and low voltage distribution systems, switchgears and networks (up to 15KV).

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Project.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD, with the ability to review and update drawings.
  • Sound knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, City by-laws and other applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings such as single line diagrams, DC schematics, Three Line diagrams.
  • Understanding of industry established maintenance practices for high and low voltage electrical equipment.
  • Ability to read relay sequence of events and COMTRADE files following protection system events.
  • Experience with electrical modelling software for short circuit coordination and arc flash incident energy calculation. Specific experience using ETAP considered an asset.
  • Experience with a CMMS system for maintenance management. Specific experience with SAP considered an asset.
