Position Summary:

The Cloud Engineer is a highly hands-on role within I&O / Cloud Engineering, responsible for designing, building, and operating the cloud foundations and shared services that enable the WELL Intelligence Platform. You will work very closely with the Senior Data Architect and Data Engineers to deliver secure, scalable, cost-effective cloud capabilities for data ingestion, transformation, governance, and consumption.

While reporting to the Director of Cloud Engineering, you will operate as a key delivery contributor for the WELL Intelligence Platform under dotted-line direction of the CDAIO, ensuring the platform’s cloud architecture, operational controls, and reliability meet business expectations for performance, availability, security, and continuity.

What you will be doing:

1) Cloud Foundations for the Data & AI Platform
  • Evolve cloud landing zones, subscription/account structure, network segmentation, and environment strategy (dev/test/prod) aligned to data platform needs.
  • Establish standardized patterns for secure connectivity to SaaS and on-prem sources, including routing, DNS, and firewall policies.
  • Implement platform requirements for high availability, backup, disaster recovery, and recovery testing.
2) Secure Data Connectivity & Network Architecture
  • Design and implement cloud networking for data movement and services.
  • Enable secure service-to-service connectivity for platform components (e.g., Snowflake networking patterns such as PrivateLink/privately managed connectivity where applicable).
  • Implement and operate network security controls (e.g., NGFW, WAF where appropriate), and support zero-trust principles.
3) Identity, Secrets, and Platform Security Controls
  • Implement IAM/RBAC patterns for platform services (least privilege, break-glass, privileged access workflows).
  • Build and operate secrets management (e.g., Key Vault/Secrets Manager patterns), certificate management, and secure key handling.
  • Partner with Security/GRC to implement audit-ready controls, logging, and evidence capture (policy-as-code where possible).
4) Infrastructure-as-Code and Delivery Enablement
  • Own and contribute to Infrastructure-as-Code modules (Terraform) for repeatable platform provisioning.
  • Enable and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and platform components.
  • Provide reusable “golden path” templates that accelerate delivery while ensuring compliance and standardization.
5) Observability, Reliability & Operations
  • Implement platform observability: centralized logging, metrics, alerting, and dashboards for key platform services.
  • Partner with the data platform team to establish SLOs/SLAs, incident runbooks, and operational readiness criteria.
  • Provide 24x7 support for incidents impacting I&O-owned services and lead/participate in root cause analysis and remediation planning.
6) Cost, Performance, and Lifecycle Management
  • Optimize cloud resource cost and performance through right-sizing, tagging standards, budgets/alerts, and proactive capacity planning.
  • Manage lifecycle support for platform infrastructure components, including patching/upgrades and deprecation planning.
7) Cross-Functional Delivery Leadership
  • Work within and across teams to deliver platform milestones; translate requirements into cloud implementation.
  • Collaborate with SREs, Developers, Vendors, and Service Providers to deliver outcomes on time and within standards.
  • Contribute to architectural reviews and ensure alignment between cloud implementation and platform design.

You have:

Education / Experience
  • 7+ years of infrastructure engineering and operations experience spanning cloud and/or hybrid environments.
  • 4+ years deep experience with at least one major cloud provider (Azure or AWS).
  • 3+ years Infrastructure-as-Code experience (Terraform).
Technical / Functional Skills
  • Strong cloud networking expertise: VPC/VNet architecture, VPN/hybrid connectivity, routing, DNS, and segmentation. PaloAlto NextGen Firewall experience would be advantageous.
  • Strong security fundamentals: IAM/RBAC, encryption, key management, secure connectivity, and audit controls.
  • CI/CD pipeline experience and strong Git-based workflows.
  • Scripting and automation capability (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Monitoring/observability experience (Azure Monitor, CloudWatch, Prometheus, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of container and orchestration concepts (Kubernetes exposure is a plus).
Ways of Working
  • Comfortable operating in a matrix: accountable to Cloud Engineering leadership while partnering closely with platform squads and following CDAIO priorities.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills; able to explain trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset with a bias for automation and standardization.
Nice to Have
  • Hands-on experience enabling modern data platforms (e.g., Snowflake connectivity patterns, data movement services, eventing/streaming foundations).
  • Experience with security posture management tools (e.g., Wiz/Ox) or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting ISO27001, SOC2, or similar control frameworks.
  • Experience with healthcare or other highly regulated environments.
