Job Details: Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T)

Posting Status: Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants.

Duration: Three contracts lasting up to eight months, commencing in March and ending in November.

Internal secondment applications are welcome. Please note, however, that members of management will not be considered for secondments into bargaining unit positions.

The incumbent will report to and receive daily direction from the Harbours Coordinator. This position works principally in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s harbor facilities. The functions performed in this position are in accordance with established procedures and practices.

Job Responsibilities
  • Represent the Corporation and department in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner in all dealings with the public, other groups, and associations.
  • Install, assemble, and dismantle harbors and docks.
  • Inspect, build, and maintain floating docks, boat cradles, related hardware, water lines, and other marina facilities.
  • Perform boat operations including launching, hauling, and towing; power boat blocking; mast rigging and de-masting sail boats.
  • Operate motorboats, ratchets, pump, bolt cutters, air compressors to repair docks, transport materials to work site, pulling and lifting anchor chains.
  • Conduct all necessary maintenance and adjustments, keeping the equipment in safe, clean, and tidy condition, making daily circle checks and reporting defects and, if necessary, small repairs in a prescribed manner.
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation Temporary Conditions for Road Work and Town of Oakville policies in the performance of all duties.
  • Assume accountability for resource loss.
  • Inspect docks and anchor chains frequently.
  • Routinely maintain and service power tools including lubricating, cleaning filters, cleans and washes trucks, trailers, plow trucks, salt trucks, winter control equipment and repairs small hand tools.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner.
  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and security in the harbor areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a minimum of 2 years of previous related experience in boating, harbors and carpentry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must hold and provide a copy of a Pleasure Craft Operator’s card.
  • Knowledge of boat operations including towing and slinging boats for haul-out by crane. Evidence of the foregoing knowledge may be demonstrated through a written test.
  • Excellent customer service and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficient time management skills and demonstrated flexibility in adjusting between duties.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and issues relevant to equipment used daily.
  • The successful candidate must have a valid and unrestricted Ontario class DZ driver’s licence (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with six or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) prior to assuming the position.
  • Must be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available for shift work and stand‑by as required including weekends and nights, and expected to work Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays when operations so require.
