Job summary

A leading track maintenance firm in Canada is seeking a ROW Track Maintainer responsible for daily tasks to meet corporate goals for safety and quality. This role involves debris removal, operating company vehicles, and climbing trees with the appropriate training. The ideal candidate has at least one year of experience in tree removal or arborist roles and must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver's license. Training and mentorship are provided for all new hires.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Right-of-way (ROW) Track Supervisor and ROW Track Foreman, the ROW Track Maintainer is responsible for successfully completing day‑to‑day tasks by meeting or exceeding corporate goals for safety, quality, profitability and schedule, resulting in extreme customer satisfaction.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Embrace our safety culture and adhering to industry and company policies and procedures
  • Remove debris from ROW as needed such as garbage, illegal dumping, sharps, encampments, trees, etc.
  • Repair and/or replace fence components as needed, such as posts, hinges, caps, latches, and locks.
  • Responsibly operate company vehicles and/or equipment and ensure all daily maintenance and inspections of the units are completed.
  • Remove vegetation using various tools such as weed whackers, brush cutters, chainsaws, pole saws, etc.
  • Ability to climb trees with proper training, rigging, and gear.
  • Perform special duties as assigned by the ROW Foreman or delegate.
  • Perform any administrative duties related to proper documentation as per PNR Quality Management System.
  • Appreciate time‑sensitive duties, plan and execute accurately to achieve daily goals and production in a safe manner according to industry standards.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Certified Tree Climber is considered an asset, or ability to acquire certification.
  • A minimum of 1 year related experience in a tree removal / arborist role.
  • Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG) certification and previous railroad experience is considered an asset.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain TIG certification as required.
  • Certified in Canadian Railway Operating Rules is considered an asset and must be able to obtain and maintain throughout employment.
  • Ability to read and understand specific documents including schedules, standard railway plans and specifications.
  • Ability to understand and efficiently carry out instructions.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards, railway engineering safety regulations and safety precautions of the work being performed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient use of computers, tablets, etc.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence required at minimum.
  • Can successfully complete PNR on‑the‑job training (OJT). Training and mentorship are provided through each step.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Works outdoors and can be exposed to all weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, lifts, bends, and moves objects up to 50 pounds on uneven terrain.
  • Exposed to loud noise.
  • Exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
