Job description
Overview

d’Esterre Seniors’ Centre is a vibrant, volunteer-powered hub where older adults gather for good food, friendship, and lifelong learning. We’re looking for a Relief Cook who loves sharing their culinary talent and enjoys teaching others. If you want flexible, part-time hours and the chance to run a fun intercultural cooking class, read on!

What you’ll do
  • Prepare and serve wholesome lunches and snacks that meet seniors’ dietary needs, following FoodSafe standards.
  • Lead our 8-week “DiversifyYourCooking” program (weekday afternoons): plan culturally diverse menus, demonstrate techniques, and guide seniors and newcomer immigrants in hands-on cooking.
  • Order supplies online (training provided), receive deliveries, rotate stock, minimize waste.
  • Supervise and coach kitchen volunteers; foster a welcoming, inclusive work atmosphere.
  • Keep the kitchen spotless — complete daily temperature, cleaning, and safety logs.
  • Cover one Wednesday evening catering service per month and occasional special events; additional shifts may arise as funding allows.
What you bring
  • FoodSafe Level 1 (required before start) and 2+ years’ experience in a commercial, community, or large‑volume home‑style kitchen.
  • Clear Vulnerable‑Sector Criminal Record Check (employer reimbursed).
  • Warm, patient communication skills and a knack for teaching groups.
  • A passion for helping others learn about cooking and nutrition is essential.
  • Comfort using or learning online ordering systems; basic computer/email ability.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 30 lb / 14 kg.
  • Assets: Experience cooking for older adults, leading volunteers, first‑aid certification, valid BC driver’s licence.
Why join us
  • Flexible, casual schedule — ideal for retirees, parents, semi‑retired chefs, or anyone wanting meaningful part‑time work.
  • Cook with purpose: every meal builds community and brightens someone’s day.
  • Collaborative, upbeat environment with committed volunteers.
  • Free meal each shift and support for professional‑development courses (e.g., FoodSafe renewal, facilitation workshops).
