Job description

The Regional Deputy Fire Chief is an integral leadership team member within the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA). The Regional Deputy Fire Chief reports directly to the Regional Chief of Emergency Services and is responsible for overseeing strategic and effective organizational management while enhancing services, fostering operational excellence, and growth.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead fire operations and contribute to the overall performance across BRFA's other emergency divisions, ensuring effective operations and collaboration.
  • Emergency response management including establishing command of fire events and other emergencies and per BRFA policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of current strategic and tactical methods for both Fire and EMS.
  • Demonstrate operational knowledge of EMS delivery, including Alberta Health Services and Alberta Health frameworks.
  • Coordinate budgets and training for firefighters, PSAP communicators, and EMS staff.
  • Oversee fire prevention programs, including investigations, inspections, and education.
  • Manage fleet and equipment planning, maintenance, and life-cycle programs.
  • Ensure knowledge of 911 PSAP operations and IT systems for emergency dispatch.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Post‑secondary diploma or degree in Fire Services, Fire Administration, Emergency Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related discipline. (A combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in a municipal setting (or equivalent municipal experience) including progressively responsible management roles.
  • Previous experience in leading, coaching and mentoring volunteer Fire Services
  • Alberta registration as an EMR (PCP preferred).
  • Current First Aid and CPR level C.
  • Current Class 5 Driver’s License (with acceptable abstract) with Q endorsement (Class 3Q preferred)
  • NFPA 1001 – Level 2
  • NFPA 1021 – Level 1 (Level 2 preferred)
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor
  • NFPA 1031 and 1032 Fire Inspector/Investigator
  • ICS 300 (ICS 400 preferred)
  • Alberta Safety Codes Officer (Fire Discipline)

The BRFA serves an expansive region with ten fire stations strategically located throughout the Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87, including Goodridge, Glendon, Iron River, Lacorey, Bonnyville, Ardmore, Fort Kent, Cold Lake and Cherry Grove. The BRFA provides ALS EMS services, under contract to EHS‑Alberta to the region and operates a regional 911 Communications Center to several municipalities in north‑central Alberta.
