Job description

Harbinger has partnered with a large and growing residential builder for a Project Accounting Manager who will oversee all financial and accounting operations related to residential construction projects, ensuring accurate reporting, cost control, and compliance with corporate and industry standards. This role requires strong leadership abilities, construction accounting knowledge, and hands‑on experience supporting multiple projects.

You will lead and mentor a team of project accountants while partnering closely with project managers, site teams, development, and senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Financial Oversight
  • Oversee full-cycle project accounting for multiple residential development projects across the GTA.

  • Review and manage monthly project financial packages, including WIP, cost-to-complete, job costing, budget vs. actuals, and variance analysis.

  • Ensure accurate recording of construction costs, invoices, holdbacks, progress draws, lien releases, and subcontractor payments.

  • Maintain project budgets, forecast updates, and cash flow projections.

  • Support preparation of financing packages, lender reporting, and compliance with loan agreements.

Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of project accountants.

  • Oversee workload allocation, performance management, training, and professional development.

  • Establish and enforce accounting processes, internal controls, and best practices across the project accounting team.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Support
  • Partner with project managers, development teams, procurement, and operations to ensure alignment between financial data and project progress.

  • Present financial insights, risks, and recommendations to senior leadership.

  • Act as a key liaison during audits, lender reviews, and external reporting requirements.

Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to company policies and financial standards.

  • Drive process enhancements to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability across project accounting functions.

  • Support system implementations, upgrades, and automation initiatives within accounting and project management tools.

Qualifications
  • CPA designation required (CPA, CA, CMA, or CGA).

  • 5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3+ years in project accounting within residential construction or development.

  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience managing accounting staff.

  • Strong working knowledge of construction project accounting practices (WIP, cost allocation, progress draws, holdbacks, etc.).

  • Experience with construction or real estate accounting systems (e.g., Yardi, JD Edwards, Jonas, Sage 300 CRE, or similar).

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial analysis.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with multiple concurrent projects and deadlines.
