Purpose of your Position - Non Union

Responsibilities

A Planning Technician I provides direct service to the public and supports planners and other technical staff as part of a Building and Permitting team in the Development Services Department.

  • Receives in-person applications pertaining to various development structures.
  • Responds to counter enquiries and provides information and assistance regarding various departmental policies, procedures, bylaws and requirements.
  • Provides technical advice to the public and development clients related to land use development, referring more complex issues to appropriate staff.
  • Researches and verifies support material relating to development applications, ensuring all applications are complete and properly documented (i.e. site plans, approvals from various other authorities, business licenses, etc.); processes land use development applications such as Development Permits, Development Variance Permits, Rezoning, etc.
  • Processes applications for building, plumbing and gas installations and renovations.
  • Issues various permits such as building demolition, occupancy, plumbing, heating, portable signs, etc., in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Identifies compliance and non-compliance aspects of an application compared to regulations, policies, bylaws and legislation requirements.
  • Creates, maintains and closes a variety of files/records; may assign to other staff for review/approval (Plan Checkers, Bylaw Enforcement, Planners and Environmental staff).
  • Books Building and Plumbing & Gas inspections for contractors and homeowners.
  • Prepares various reports, statistics, correspondence, permits and forms using a computer system with Microsoft Office products.
  • Guides customers on the use City website information; sells reports and forms to the public.
