Overview
The Women’s Reproductive Health and Newborn Care program is a regional program located at McMaster University Medical Centre. The program includes a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinic, inpatient units, a critical care unit, Labour and Delivery, triage, and obstetrical and gynecology clinics. The MFM Clinic provides outpatient services to a diverse women’s health population, with care during the antenatal and postpartum phases of pregnancy for women and their families. Wards 4B, 4C and the Labour and Delivery units are included in this family-centered tertiary care program.
Responsibilities
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assist MFM physicians and act as a physician extender to assess, analyze, prioritize, plan and evaluate care for both inpatients and outpatients.
- Assist in the assessment, care and management planning of newly referred MFM patients in the outpatient setting and provide ongoing outpatient antenatal care.
- Provide direct patient care to inpatient antepartum and postpartum obstetrical patients, including daily rounds and addressing stable acute medical issues; perform detailed histories and physical examinations, order tests, review results, complete progress notes and organize consults based on care plans with attending MFMs; dictate consultations and coordinate discharges.
- Under the direction of the Division Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine, provide direct patient care for MFM patients in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic, Labour and Delivery, Labour and Delivery Triage, 4C and 4B wards, and Women’s Health ICU and Step-Down Unit.
- Complete comprehensive and focused health histories and physical examinations; perform procedures as directed; develop care plans with MFM Physicians; provide counseling on preventive health care; order and interpret laboratory or radiological investigations; perform controlled acts as delegated by a physician.
- Adopt roles typical of a Junior Resident on a clinical teaching unit; serve as a physician extender for MFM physicians; assist with outpatient organization of the clinical service; co-supervise PA students; perform other tasks within the supervising physician’s scope of practice as qualified.
- Outpatient responsibilities include history and physical examinations of new consultations in the MFM clinic and patients in the labour and delivery triage area; order investigations, track results, plan care, request consultations and dictate consultations; provide ongoing outpatient antenatal care with documentation in the health record.
- Inpatient responsibilities include providing direct patient care to stable acute antepartum and postpartum patients; daily rounds on antepartum and postpartum inpatients; develop care plans with attending physicians and the interprofessional team; identify, prepare and dictate discharges; order tests, review results, complete progress notes, and organize consults based on care plans; document in the health record.
Other notes: This role includes the potential to develop Medical Directives for the PA, allowing for prescribing of common medications, ultrasounds, x-rays, and ordering blood tests, as appropriate.
Reporting
Reports to: Deputy Chief Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department Head Maternal Fetal Medicine; Clinical Manager of Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic and the Program Director Women’s and Newborns Care.

Qualifications
- Graduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant Program.
- Required recent clinical experience providing direct patient care for obstetrical patients and/or related experience.
- Required current knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of pregnant women.
- Required demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching of women with obstetrical concerns.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and implement care in busy work environments.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with other team members.
- Committed to lifelong learning and the delivery of evidence-based care.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, Days. May be required to work on call and weekends.
