Job description
Personal Support Worker (PSW), Home Support – Part-time 0.5

We are hiring an experienced Personal Support Worker to provide home support services to clients and families within VON’s Home Support Program. This role is part‑time 0.5 FTE, scheduled for days and evenings, with 37.5 hours bi‑weekly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and evaluate the client’s home and care plan to determine needed changes and advise the supervisor.
  • Collaborate with the Personal Support Program Manager to develop and implement the written care plan under direction of the Manager.
  • Implement changes to the care plan for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  • Report verbally to the immediate supervisor or manager any changes in the client’s personal support needs or home situation.
  • Perform personal support tasks such as light cleaning, meal preparation, laundry, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care to assist the client with mobility, bed transfer, eating, dressing, and personal hygiene.
  • Provide simple bedside care under the direction of a nurse, as required.
  • Provide respite care to clients as required.
  • Support clients’ families by providing child‑care to allow for family relief.
  • Organize each day’s activities by setting priorities for personal support and other activities under direction of the Program Manager or supervisor.
  • Complete daily call checks and other forms to maintain the effective operation of the personal and home support service.
  • Assess the client’s communication patterns and ability to relate.
  • Communicate with the health team regarding the client’s homemaking, physical, and emotional needs and inform the supervisor of any changes or concerns.
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and VON policies and procedures, and risk management policies and guidelines to promote and protect client safety.
Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma (secondary school education preferred).
  • CCA Certification required in Nova Scotia.
  • Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR Level C Certificate, if applicable.
  • Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.
Skill Requirements
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective communication with clients and families in a respectful, empathetic, and understanding manner.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently as required.
  • Ability to take direction well and adjust to working in different social and economic environments.
  • Capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.
Other Requirements
  • Access to a personal vehicle and a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
  • Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
  • Flexible hours and ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The Personal Support Worker is eligible for the temporary $3.00 per hour wage enhancement for all hours spent directly caring for clients.
