The Opportunity

To support CGMH in maintaining capacity during the winter surge, CGMH is seeking PSWs for temporary extended care in Medical, Surgical, and Ambulatory Care areas. This temporary opportunity is expected to continue until March 31, 2026. The extended care will be used based on capacity, and PSWs may be assigned to Medical, Inpatient Surgical or Ambulatory Care units based on acuity.

Qualifications
  • PSW certification and/or partial completion of post-secondary nursing education
  • Experience in a high-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to interact courteously with the public
  • Ability to function as a team member in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to accept direction and work independently
  • Satisfactory work performance in present position
  • Current CPR certification
  • Commitment to a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers
  • Adherence to duties of workers as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Effective communication in English (written and verbal) to team members, patients, and families; knowledge of additional languages is an asset
  • Basic computer skills
  • Commitment to professional growth and development
  • Ability to perform all bona fide and essential duties, including physical tasks such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending
  • Excellent attendance/performance record
  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with the health care team
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, lifts and transfers, bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, and toileting
  • Perform delegated tasks in compliance with RHPA for transfer of functional training completed
  • Assist with medication reminders in accordance with established policy
  • Observe patients and environments; report and document unsafe conditions or changes to an appropriate supervisor
  • Communicate information related to activities of daily living, light housekeeping, meal planning and preparation according to the Plan of Care
  • Complete and maintain related records and documentation, such as communication books and progress notes
  • May participate in inventory and stocking of supplies
  • Other duties as assigned

Location: Medical, Inpatient Surgical, and Med/Surg Overflow areas

Employee Group: SEIU

Employment Type: Temporary Part-Time (approximately 6 months)

Start Date: In line with next Hospital Orientation intake

Hours of Work: 12-hour shifts including days, nights and weekends. Operations run 24/7. Regularly scheduled up to 24 hours per week (48/pay).

Wage: $31.184 - $31.805 per hour plus applicable shift premiums for evenings, nights and weekends.
