Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides Resident Centered Care, based on the principles of treating residents with kindness, honesty, sensitivity, comfort, discretion, respect, and understanding. The PSW remains cognitive that all interactions follow the principles of preserving resident dignity, supporting independence, individualized care/preferences, privacy, and do no harm. The PSW works with the Registered Nurses’ direction and supervision, follows care plans, documents and reports to ensure continuity, and safe care.

THIS IS A CASUAL POSITION WITH SHIFTS AVAILABLE ON ALL ROTATIONS
Accountabilities: The PSW supports all aspects of the residents’ Daily Living
Residents’ Personal Care
  • Hygiene (full or partial bed baths, tub bath, showers); bedtime care and hygiene
  • Grooming (including hair washing, applying make-up, jewelry, dressing)
  • Elimination/toileting (including emptying of bedpans, urinals, leg bags; measuring and recording output, changing incontinence products, providing hygiene peri care)
  • Provision of preventive skin care (turning and positioning, cleansing / drying, moisturizer application)
  • Oral care (including putting in dentures and removal and cleaning)
  • Hearing aid (putting in, removing and ensuring safe storage as directed)
  • Provision of treatments / Temperatures as delegated by registered staff
Residents’ Nutritional Role
  • Assists resident who require support and assistance eating
  • Setting up and cleaning up dining tables
  • Records food and fluid intake of residents
  • Distributes nourishment to residents
Residents’ Activation – PSW role
  • Range of motion exercises (as directed by Home Policy and Procedures where available)
  • Assisting with transfers, mobility, ambulation, walking
  • Use and care of adaptive aids/prosthesis
  • Transport/porter, accompany to activities, functions or internal appointments
  • Maintenance & cleaning of assistive devices, transfer devices, and mobility aids
Residents’ Socialization PSW role

includes, but not limited to, ensuring residents are prepared for appointments, outings, medical visits, family visits, meetings, and on-site group activities

Environment – PSW role

includes, but not limited to, ensuring a safe, clean (including washroom counters, commodes, toilet), uncluttered environment. Residents’ personal clothing, toiletries, linens, and equipment are stored appropriately in a timely fashion

Communication & Documentation: The PSW’s role
  • Observes all aspects of the residents’ well-being (physical, emotional, spiritual), report to supervisor and update as needed, document appropriately, and monitor.
  • Implements directions of Registered Staff and Care Plan. Communicate changes in residents’ abilities and care.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This is an onsite position at a Long Term Care home.
  • This position requires a combination of walking, standing, sitting, keyboarding, and use of proper body mechanics such as bending at the knees.
  • May interact with residents with unpredictable / responsive behaviours

Education and Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
  • Completion of an authorized Personal Support Worker Program (NACC credited)
  • Must present a current clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check acceptable to the TSA
  • Must present a current negative TB test (2 step or chest x-ray)
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • Ability to read and write and communicate fluently in English
Skills and Capabilities
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and quickly adapt to varied operation needs
  • Ability to work independently and an in interprofessional team, and follow direction of Registered staff
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $29.06 to $29.39 with a maximum of $29.71.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
