Overview
As a member of the military, Nurse Practitioners provide care and treatment to ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and supported populations in a primary and tertiary care environment in Canada and while on operation.
Nurse Practitioners work within a collaborative practice model with other members of the health care team and lead the delivery of health services within their area of practice. They have the opportunity to work in various domains including:
Work environment
As a Nurse Practitioner in the Primary Reserve Force, you will enroll through a specific Reserve unit. Outside of training, your Reserve unit will be your workplace on a part-time basis, and relocation is not obligatory. You typically work one night per week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.
During field exercises and deployments, Nurse Practitioners live and work alongside CAF members.
If you join the Regular Force, upon completing training, you will be assigned to your first base, with potential relocations throughout your career. As a Primary Reserve member, you will work part-time through a specific Reserve unit, with no obligation to relocate outside of training.
Entry plans
If you already hold a university degree and a license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Canada, along with civilian experience, the CAF may place you directly into a Nurse Practitioner role after evaluation. Additional courses may be required. Contact a Canadian Forces Health Services Recruiter at HSRecruiting-RecrutementSS@forces.gc.ca for more information.
Training
After Rank Qualification Lieutenant training, civilian Nurse Practitioners must complete a military healthcare provider course at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, to ensure clinical competencies for occupational and environmental care.
Opportunities for specialized skills development include courses in Dive Medicine and others.
Part-time options
Reserve Force Nurse Practitioners are trained to the same standards as their Regular Force counterparts. Civilian experience should reflect employment as a Nurse Practitioner in Adult Primary or Acute Care. For clarification, contact a Canadian Forces Health Services Recruiter.
