This position is eligible to work remotely on a part‑time basis (Note: Must be able to report to a City of Greater Sudbury work location on short notice).
Characteristic Duties
- Provide mid to high-level support across the full range of technologies and applications for the purposes of network connectivity and reliability. Prioritize incidents and requests and determine most critical situations.
- Coordinate projects and set timelines to meet goals and objectives while ensuring completion within budget.
- Identify and log the support issue being encountered. Analyze the support issue to determine the cause and the appropriate solution. Direct unsolved issues to the appropriate area of specialization. Ensure end user satisfaction by monitoring each support call received through to completion. Provide leadership for networking incidents when required.
- Provide technical guidance to Support Technicians and Network Specialists. Provide recommendations for proper use of hardware and software while promoting self‑reliance to all parties.
- Liaise with external/internal groups and contractors/vendors and departmental staff to assist with new projects.
- Maintain and organize a list of solutions that can be referenced by all support technicians, network specialists and technology infrastructure analysts to make problem resolution more efficient.
- Stay abreast of new technology. Recommend new equipment and processes to enhance system performance and security while being budget conscious.
- Plan, design, implement and configure network systems and infrastructure including routers, firewalls, switches, Core network devices, servers, telephony products, security, antivirus strategies, SAN and NAS systems, cloud infrastructure systems, Industrial Internet of Things (IOT/IIOT) and any other connected devices.
- Assist managing administrative access to the network and its associated systems. Provide access to other staff as required and manage roles and responsibilities of that access. Provide audit reports as required.
- Instruct or assist in the instruction of courses offered by Information Technology.
- Maintain organized documentation regarding network design, asset inventories, configuration information and knowledge bases as required. Assist with the departmental budget as required.
- Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS’s Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Community College diploma in Microcomputers and Systems or Information Systems with additional courses/certification or experience in Cisco, Extreme, Microsoft, VMWare, Amazon or other network infrastructure technologies.
- Over two and one half (2½) years up to and including five (5) years of diversified experience dealing with the configuration, and troubleshooting of various network and communications components for Data/voice. Experienced with network security and enterprise Core based redundant network systems, as well as Firewalls, Routers, distributed and hyper‑converged network storage systems, internet filtering/monitoring, cloud infrastructure, IoT systems.
- Experience with planning, implementation and maintenance of large networks and associated systems for specialized environments utilizing Cisco, Extreme, HP Aruba or other enterprise wired and wireless equipment.
- Experience with solving complex problems in a mixed network/Active directory/Azure Cloud environment using Microsoft and other Linux‑based server environments.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Enterprise network systems/servers VMware.
- Strong skills and understanding of Routing and switching concepts. Local area networks and LAN/WAN administration/troubleshooting, Netflow, traffic analysis, VPN gateways, multifactor and cloud authentication methods, distributed and hyper‑converged network storage systems, Fiber channel switching and fiber WAN connectivity, Zero Trust Networking concepts.
- General knowledge of telecom, SCADA, and building automation systems and equipment.
- Microsoft and other Network related certifications are an asset.
- Satisfactory keyboarding ability, effective communication skills.
- Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
- Physical capability to operate a vehicle safely, possession of a valid driver’s licence and an acceptable driving record, will be considered an asset.
