We are seeking to hire a talented lawyer as Legal Counsel to join our award-winning Legal and Corporate Commercial Services team, located in downtown Toronto. Reporting to a Director, Legal Services, the successful candidates will deliver high quality legal work and provide proactive, timely and strategic advice to our business teams. You will gain exposure to a wide variety of complex and interesting work that is critical to public transit expansion and operation, including complex transit projects, contract negotiations, public procurements, dispute resolution, and day-to-day operations. You will also work with other transit agencies, railway companies, regional and municipal governments in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the federal government, and the private sector.

Responsibilities
  • Report to a Director in the Construction portfolio within the Legal Services division of the Metrolinx Legal and Corporate Commercial Services department.
  • While primarily supporting your reporting portfolio, you may also work on necessary and high value projects with other portfolios within our department.
  • Work independently and with project teams on high value files that are critical to the delivery and operation of Metrolinx transit programs.
  • Negotiate, draft and manage key commercial contracts.
  • Provide high-value, proactive and timely legal and strategic advice.
  • Support effective performance and claims management, including dispute resolution.
  • Provide advice/opinions on the interpretation and application of legislation and regulations.
  • Lead and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for the Legal department and other divisions, applying LEAN methodologies in accordance with Metrolinx standards.
  • Deliver briefings to business stakeholders and management.
  • Contribute to policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Efficiently prioritize tasks, push files forward and escalate issues appropriately.
Qualifications
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario as a Lawyer.
  • Demonstrated professional experience as a Lawyer in Ontario.
  • Completion of a degree in law (JD or LLB).
  • A commitment to inclusion, teamwork and collaboration, continuous improvement, and learning and development.
  • The ability to efficiently identify issues and implement solutions, provide sound legal advice, and suggest business-oriented solutions to complex issues.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, dispute resolution skills
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
