As a Medical Laboratory Assistant,you are responsible for the preparation of samples and/or reagents for routine processing, the performance of simple non-interpretivetests under the technical oversight of a Medical Laboratory Technologist asrequired, and the independent performance of simple non-interpretive tests escalating to a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist for support and guidance as required. You will also ensure quality control checks and standards are run as required and participate in all quality assurance programs andensure company and Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines are observed. Lastly, you will perform routine maintenance of laboratoryequipmentas appropriateanddeal withproblems that arise.

Status: Full-time permanent
Hours: Monday to Friday between 7am and 9pm; rotational shifts.
Location: Downtown Kelowna
Discipline: Lab Operations - Chemistry
Workstyle: 100% onsite.

  • Receive and sort samples

  • Ensurethatallabnormal,criticalandSTATSare processedasoutlined inthe department guidelines
  • Ensurethatallsamplesareproperlylabeledandidentifiedbeforetesting
  • Followestablishedprotocolforthehandlingofunsuitablesamples
  • Perform pre-analytic specimen processing
  • Operateinstrumentsfollowingdepartmentprocedures
  • Performsimplenon-interpretivetestingprocedures
  • Handle infectiousmaterial following approved procedureswhile adhering to government regulations(i.e. TDG) as required
  • Responsibleforthe follow-uponmissingsamples,documentationandresultsasandwhen required
  • Ensureallinquiries andproblemsare handledinacourteousandprofessionalmanner
  • Ensureadequateamountofsuppliesareonhandandthatvalidatedreagentsandtestingkitstobeusedareindateorder
  • Ensure thatqualitycontrolchecksare performedasrequiredindocumentedworkprocedures
  • Responsibleformonitoring qualitycontrolguidelinesand makingappropriatecorrections
  • ReferresultsforMedicalLaboratoryTechnologistto review and release
  • Responsibletofollowallrelevantpreand/orpostanalyticalqualityprotocolsasdescribedinthecompanyquality assurancemanual
  • Performroutinemaintenanceon laboratory instruments andequipmentfollowingdepartmentprocedures
  • Documentallmaintenanceperformed,includingminortroubleshootingfollowingmanufacturer’sinstructions
  • Participate in the review of procedural documents for accuracy and effectiveness as required
  • Observe andreportallmalfunctions inequipmentandmaintainallrequiredlogbooks for routineequipment
  • Responsiblefordisinfectingtheworkareaandequipmentonadailybasis
  • Storeanddiscardspecimensaccordingtoappropriatedepartmentproceduremanuals
What YOU bring to the role:
  • You have completed a Diploma/DegreeinHealthorScienceorhave a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA)certificationorare aGraduateofanapprovedlaboratory assistantcourse
  • You are customer-focused with a genuine care for patient’s health
  • Demonstrate skill in phlebotomy, with the ability to manage anxious patients through the sample obtaining process in a pleasant, calming and reassuring manner
  • Prioritize and self-manage within a deadline-oriented environment
  • Be extremely detail oriented
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, at a level that enables you to communicate instructions, clearly and understandably, to patients
Salary: starting at $24.25per hour
The hiring pay range has been established; however, the final pay offer will be determined by taking into consideration various factors including but not limited to, level of experience and education requirements.
