Job summary

This job posting is for an existing vacancy and therefore will be filled accordingly.

Note: Should a fully qualified candidate not be found from the applicant pool, consideration may be given to applicants who do not possess the required inspection qualifications or previous experience inspecting Part 3 & Part 9 buildings outlined in the qualifications below. In such a case, the position may be filled as a Mechanical Inspector II at Pay Grade 11 ($85,369 – $104,105) and the successful candidate will be required to obtain all required certifications within the probation period (130 worked days).

Job Responsibilities
  • Review and inspect the Plumbing and HVAC systems of Part 9 and Part 3 buildings to ensure conformance with the OBC and related standards.
  • Ensure that the professionals undertaking general review of construction, where required by code, do so in accordance with legislated standards.
  • Ensure compliance with local by-laws and Provincial codes, through oral and written communications.
  • Produce legible, concise, complete, and accurate reports; maintain a record of field inspections.
  • Liaise with property owners, contractors, engineers, architects and other departments on matters related to construction activity.
  • Monitor an assigned area for building construction and/or alterations without a permit.
  • Investigate and respond to building complaints from the public.
  • Prepare and issue legal documents and attend court in legal proceedings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience in the plumbing and HVAC construction industry.
  • Successful completion of the following inspection qualifications:
  • General Legal/Process or CBO Legal
  • Plumbing - All Buildings
  • Building Services
  • Successful completion of House, Small Buildings, Large Buildings or Complex Buildings is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Municipal Mechanical (Plumbing and HVAC) Inspector on Part 9 and Part 3 buildings or 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical system design and construction fields with an in-depth knowledge of the Ontario Building Code.
  • Current plumber license with plumbing installation experience in all types of buildings will be an asset.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, written and interpersonal skills are essential as well as the ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Proficient in the use of computer technologies and being familiar with Microsoft Office Suite of Products.
  • Travel to a variety of sites is required.
  • Successful candidates, who are new hires and/or who have not performed in this position previously will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment.
