Mechanical Fitter – Job Description
Position Summary
The Mechanical Fitter is responsible for assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical machinery and equipment. This role involves interpreting technical drawings, diagnosing mechanical faults, performing precision fitting, and ensuring safe and reliable operation of mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Installation & Assembly
- Assemble and install mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, conveyors, piping systems, and rotating machinery.
- Fit, align, and adjust parts using tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, torque wrenches, and precision measuring instruments.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications.
- Maintenance & Repairs
- Carry out preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on mechanical systems.
- Diagnose mechanical issues, replace worn components, and restore equipment to proper functioning.
- Perform shaft alignment, bearing replacement, coupling installation, and lubrication tasks.
- Fabrication & Machining
- Use hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment such as grinders, drill presses, lathes, and welding machines (if qualified).
- Fabricate and modify components as required to support mechanical repairs.
- Safety & Compliance
- Follow safety procedures, lock-out/tag-out practices, and risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and relevant standards (e.g., OSHA, ASME, ISO, or local equivalents).
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Quality Control
- Inspect finished work to ensure accuracy and adherence to specifications.
- Conduct routine checks and tests on machinery after installation or maintenance.
- Document completed work, parts used, and observations for equipment history.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with supervisors, engineers, and other trades to coordinate tasks.
- Report issues, equipment conditions, and maintenance needs promptly.
- Provide feedback to improve system reliability and performance.
Required Qualifications
- Technical certificate, trade test, or diploma in Mechanical Fitting, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Proven experience as a mechanical fitter in an industrial or construction environment.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, tools, and maintenance practices.

- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and technical manuals.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
