Mechanical Engineer - Railway Systems

The BC Rapid Transit Co. Ltd (BCRTC) maintains and operates the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain Lines from our central facilities in south Burnaby. These lines connect downtown Vancouver to the surrounding cities of Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Moody and Surrey. With future expansion and major renewal projects underway, this role offers an exciting opportunity to work within one of the longest fully‑automated rapid transit systems in the world.

Responsibilities
  • Act as the asset owner, applying professional engineering expertise to support safe, reliable, and efficient rail transportation within an integrated, multi‑jurisdictional environment.
  • Participate in the development and refinement of asset engineering, management, and maintenance strategy, and support the implementation of Annual Maintenance Plans, Asset Renewal Plans, Asset Improvement Plans, and capital replacement plans.
  • Assist in developing and refining engineering standards, policies, and procedures for asset maintenance and projects, ensuring alignment with regulations, codes, and industry best practices.
  • Provide innovative engineering advice and guidance on quality assurance, compliance assurance, and asset performance; identify asset problems and deliver technical solutions.
  • Support investigations of significant failures, conduct root cause analysis, and present reports and recommendations to Senior Engineer and Principal Engineer.
  • Assist in the development of FMEA/FMECA where required.
  • Ensure effective communication with all stakeholders.
  • Provide engineering support to capital and non‑capital projects of moderate to high risk and complexity; review and recommend approval of technical specifications, drawings, and documentation.
  • Participate in developing and refining configuration control procedures for asset maintenance; recommend changes to configuration control documentation.
  • Select appropriate techniques, procedures, and methods; investigate and review industry best practices and recommend changes to BCRTC practice.
  • Investigate and review existing and emerging technology; recommend application to SkyTrain systems and support business case development and implementation of best practice and new technology.
  • Develop and maintain professional, trustworthy working relationships with stakeholders within BCRTC and across the enterprise.
  • Supervise reporting staff, including hiring, training, development, coaching, monitoring, and performance management.
Qualifications

Eligibility: Registration with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or equivalent professional engineer designation.
