Job summary

A leading engineering solution provider is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to shape mission-critical systems for Canada’s next-generation fleet of protection and research vessels. The ideal candidate will have over 3 years of experience in mechanical engineering focused on electronics packaging. Responsibilities include designing advanced electronic packaging solutions and conducting analyses to enhance product performance. This is a hybrid contract position based in Ottawa, offering flexibility in work days and a pay range of $40.00 to $47.00 per hour.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, ideally focused on electronics packaging.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and CREO (CAD packages), FEA, CFD, and new product development.
  • Proficiency in GD&T, aerospace, defence, and naval domains.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review project deliverables such as plans, reports, models.
  • Create electronic packaging solutions in compliance with industry standards.
  • Conduct thermal, fluids (CFD), and structural (FEA) analysis and simulations.
  • Support manufacturing and production teams during new product introduction phases.

Skills

Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping mission‑critical systems for Canada’s next‑generation fleet of protection and research vessels. Collaborate with a dynamic team to design advanced electronics packaging solutions for assemblies operating in harsh environments, enabling state‑of‑the‑art situational awareness for the Canadian Navy.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review project deliverables such as plans, reports, models, and drawings within your area of technical expertise.
  • Create and design electronic packaging solutions in compliance with industry standards, addressing environmental conditions like shock/vibration, moisture/dust ingress, and electrical/magnetic susceptibility and emissions.
  • Utilize computer‑aided design tools to design new components and systems, and modify existing designs to enhance production.
  • Conduct thermal, fluids (CFD), and structural (FEA) analysis and simulations.
  • Analyze schematics and mechanical drawings to ensure accurate transfer to manufacturing.
  • Build parts Bill Of Materials (BOMs) and manage obsolescence challenges as necessary.
  • Apply configuration/change management principles throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support manufacturing and production teams during new product introduction phases.
  • Assist in the development of budgets, schedules, progress reports, and trade studies.
  • Conduct peer reviews and provide support to colleagues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Functional Lead.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, ideally focused on electronics packaging.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and CREO (CAD packages), FEA, CFD, and new product development.
  • Proficiency in GD&T, aerospace, defence, and naval domains.
Assets
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Mechanical Technologist diploma from an accredited post‑secondary institution.
  • Experience with Military Standards such as MIL-STD 810, MIL-STD 461/464, and MIL-STD 901/167.
  • Resourceful individual with strong vendor liaison and customer communication skills.
  • Results‑oriented self‑starter with a strong work ethic.
Work Environment

Hybrid work environment with a requirement of 2–3 days per week on‑site, offering flexibility with no fixed days.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Ottawa, ON.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 – $47.00/hr.
