Position Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President, Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics Division, the Logistics Manager is responsible for the planning, coordinating and execution of the strategy associated with the end-to-end logistics within the complex transportation network servicing the Arctic.
The role includes leadership of a team in the provision of customer service to the Co-op System that rely on complex fly in and seasonal transportation networks including sealift, barge and winter road.
This role requires advanced logistical planning, risk management and stakeholder coordination to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods to some of the most challenging operating environments.
This key management position is also responsible for the management of transportation/logistics contracts and the coordination and administration of transportation/logistics activities for the Co-op System in accordance with approved financial plans.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, directs and oversees the movement and distribution of goods, ensuring efficiency, cost – effective and timely delivery into community.
- Budgeting, negotiating contracts, carrier rates, analyzing data, overseeing shipping schedules, supervising staff and troubleshooting supply chain issues.
- Prepare annual operating budgets and manage the activities of the department to achieve the approved goals set out in the financial plan;
- Monthly budget variance reporting
- Development and implementation of logistics strategies
- Lead the System’s process for request for proposals and contract negotiations for the provision of logistical services;
- Optimizing/refining processes and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Recruitment, orientation, training, supervising, coaching and motivation of logistics and warehouse personnel.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, carriers and customers.
- Troubleshooting delivery delays and customer issues.
- Manage systems to ensure pricing structures adequately reflect logistics costing (Rate Matrix)
- For air, ground, and marine operations, reorganize shipping schedules, carrier and third-party selection to ensure optimum cost is achieved with superior on-time carrier delivery performance.
- Coordinate and manage the Co-op system annual seasonal resupply programs (Winter Road, Barge, Sealift)
- Fostering strong relationships and collaborating with other internal stakeholders within Arctic Co-operatives and the Co-operative System
- Work closely with carriers to ensure service levels meet or exceed expectations;
- Obtain a good understanding of all functions in the department and provide backup as required;
- Deliver orientations to new managers and staff for the Logistics Department;
- Ensure compliance with aviation and marine regulatory requirements as it pertains to dangerous goods handling.
- Travel to attend meetings with stakeholders, logistic HUB visits, including departure of sealift and barges as required.

Qualifications
- Extremely organized with excellent follow up and prioritization skills.
- Excellent problem solving, communication, leadership and analytical abilities.
- Proven ability to lead change, manage priorities, and collaborate effectively across functions.
- Strong negotiation skills
- Understanding of the retail environment
- Proven experience managing air, marine and seasonal ground transportation
- Specific experience with transport in the Arctic is an asset.
- Strong understanding of northern infrastructure limitations and seasonal planning an asset.
- Must have strong customer service skills and ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with key business partners both internal and external.
- Strong working knowledge of storage, packing and shipping techniques.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication
- Proven Computer skills with a good understanding of office software including MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, Power BI
- A minimum 5 to 10 years in transportation and distribution.
- Demonstrated analytical skills ability to effectively solve problems and develop sound strategies for improving systems and procedures;
- Commitment to continued personal development;
- Ability to travel, approximately 1-3 weeks per year;
- Post secondary education and training Bachelors or Master’s degree in Logistics or Supply Chain Management would be an asset
