Job Family Group: Business Management

The Litigation Paralegal works in collaboration with the paralegals, law clerks and lawyers supporting Canadian Personal and Commercial Banking. This role is opened in Montreal and in Toronto and bilingualism is required. The role requires the Paralegal to work in a complex and changing environment where legal, regulatory, and reputational risks must be constantly considered.

This individual has access to sensitive and confidential customer and bank information and must exercise discretion to protect the confidentiality of this information, and privilege, when applicable. Sound judgment, organizational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential. The paralegal communicates and maintains relationships not only with the legal team and other colleagues within the bank’s Legal and Regulatory Compliance Group, but also with internal clients and external counsel.

Accountabilities
  • Handles daily internal inquiries from our business and internal or external stakeholders. Ability to promptly provide practical legal advice and triage to the appropriate internal group if needed.
  • Ability to take a risk-based approach and to efficiently provide advice on a variety of topics (e.g. production orders, subpoenas, garnishments, Mareva, Norwich, questions related to estates, POA and fraud).
  • Performs legal research using various research tools.
  • Handles internally or oversees less complex litigation matters, including small claims matters.
  • Support and prepare witnesses.
  • Works independently on special projects relating to legal and regulatory matters.
  • Works in collaboration with and supports internal counsel.
  • Assists with regular reporting and prepare related presentation material as required.
Qualifications
  • 7 years experience or more.
  • Strong technology skills (proficient knowledge of iManage, OneDrive, SharePoint, Relativity, MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Westlaw).
  • Knowledge of both civil law and common law considered a strong asset.
  • The ability to review pleadings and other documents, communicate effectively with legal and non-level staff, filter reports for distribution and work on assigned special projects.
  • Experience in legal research, summarizing documents and analysis of data.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle several projects simultaneously.
  • A high level of attention to detail is essential for this role: the Paralegal may be the first, and in some cases the only legal professional to assess a particular legal matter.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Superior matter management and organizational skills and strong writing abilities are critical.
  • Ability to receive general direction and run projects independently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
  • Fluent in English and French.

You’re fluent in French and English to support business operations outside the province of Quebec.
