Overview

Lighting/Omni tech - Theatre Practitioner - Level 2 or 3

We are hiring for two term positions:

  • October 1 - 4, 2025
  • November 12 - 21, 2025

The Opportunit(y)

This Electric/Omni tech position will have a background in lighting, with basic competencies in the remaining departments. The job tasks may include assisting across other technical areas depending on production needs, including staging, sound, and video departments.

Responsibilities
  • Support the integration of department-wide activities and, when needed, coordinate highly specialized activities as required.
  • Execute all job tasks with attention to safety procedures.
  • Provide technical production support for music concerts and a wide variety of other productions including dance, opera, and theatre.
  • Technically support live music performances including string quartets, orchestras, chamber music, new music, rock, and pop acts.
  • Liaise with other staff to ensure effective support is provided to artistic clients and participants.
  • Assist with live audio setups for concerts, including microphone setup and basic troubleshooting.
  • Assist with wireless microphone system setups and mic’ing up performers.
  • Hang and focus lights and assist in projections department activities as needed.
  • Assist in general stage carpentry setups for concerts and dance shows.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of fly systems and the ability to operate fly system components.
  • Understand theatrical rigging and run shows as running crew for shows, including planning, setup, calls, and changeovers.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 2: minimum 3 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a theatre or performing arts production environment.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 3: minimum 5 years’ experience as a working practitioner in their discipline within a theatre or performing arts production environment.
  • Formal theatre education is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and multimedia and able to operate specialized equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the theories and practices that support this discipline.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to stay calm under pressure; able to work with tight, changing timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of related industry trends, up-to-date techniques, and current health and safety standards.
  • Able to apply professional theatre techniques to provide the required quality, efficiency, and support level for Performing Arts.
Special Requirements
  • Due to the nature of the job, the candidate must be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule including weekends.
Employment Terms and Benefits
  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500-hour probationary period.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 2: pay between $22.59 and $25.85 per hour, up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 3: pay between $27.17 and $31.51 per hour, up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Two term positions: October 1–4, 2025 and November 12–21, 2025.
